Around the Secondary Classes
Year 7 History
As Year 7 students delve into the study of history this term, timelines serve as an important tool for understanding the major events and milestones that shaped the world. Classes recently commenced a study on Ancient China, which began with the creation of a timeline to display in classrooms.
By creating a timeline, students can identify significant developments, achievements, and changes that occurred during a particular period. Students can also see how the development of Ancient China coincided with other civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and how their interactions shaped world history.

The market is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 10, with primary students visiting the event with their classroom teachers.
Items will be priced between $1 and $5 with all proceeds going to charity.

Year 9 Science
On Thursday 4 May, Year 9 students completed an eye dissection practical.
We were grouped with one or two others students and followed a set method. We were mainly focused on inspecting the parts of the eye, specifically the lens. We tested the lens in a few ways, for example when we put the lens up to a piece of newspaper it would magnify the words. It was a very informative and interesting experience, and there are so many practicals still to come later in the year. Thank you to Mr Herbert who made the experience of the dissection of a sheep's eye possible.

Queenborough Classic 2023
The Queenborough Classic is an assessment task for all secondary PE classes. The task involves each student running as far as they can in 12 minutes around the track at Lower Queenborough Oval, Sandy Bay. The task measures aerobic capacity, allowing students to understand what distance they are expected to be able to cover in 12 minutes to receive a SOUND grade at the minimum.
The Australian physical activity guidelines recommend 5 - 17 year olds should complete at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day which increases the heart rate. It doesn't need to be 60 minutes continuously, it can be broken up into smaller sessions throughout the day. The guidelines also recommend that at least 3 days of activity should be vigorous. A recent study suggested that only 2% of 13-17 years olds in Australia are meeting the recommendations.
In secondary Physical Education lessons, students ran with the purpose of increasing their fitness in preparation for this assessment. They were either allocated a time with increasing length each lesson, or given a number of laps to complete in the session. The running sessions also helped improve aerobic capacity as part of each student’s preparation for the Cross Country carnival.
There were some excellent results recorded and students should be proud of their own individual achievements. The top performers in each year level were:
Year Level | Student | Distance |
---|---|---|
Year 7 | Riley Bain | 2896m |
Year 8 | Amelia Sing | 2696m |
Year 9 | Lacey Tilyard | 2820m |
Year 10 | Bella Quin | 2892m |
For any student who missed this assessment and wants to run, there will be a catch up session during a lunch time in Week 6.
