NGSC Chess tournament

This term we are running a chess tournament over 6 weeks. Students play 1 game per week until the end of term, with prizes for best in year level and best overall.

The buzz in the library is one to behold, we pack out the silent study space (which isn’t so silent during chess) every week with students competing in the tournament, playing friendly games against each other, or challenging a teacher for the “I beat the teacher trophy”, not many have been handed out this year.

The tournament is going well with 22 players who signed up from all year levels.

To determine the winning house and keep the competition fair we are taking the points from the top 4 players from each house to have a winning house. The current house points are as follows:

  • Aqua 10 points
  • Silver 7 Points
  • Orange 6 points
  • Purple 3.5 points

Year 8 Level Assistant Coordinator

Debating/ Public Speaking and SRC Coordinator

In what was an excellent night of debating, our student representatives demonstrated the values of the school and were excellent role models. They left a great impression on the audience, adjudicators and their opponents. Last night our teams competed against Geelong Grammar School in what would be a difficult contest. The debates were extremely competitive, passionate and fierce. Our A-Grade team of Noorullah Hussaini, Logan Scott and Haisong Qi lost by a very close 3 points Our B-Grade team of Elijah Ryan, Brodie Orrock and Mayla Ladduhetti lost by just 1 point! And our final A-Grade team of Johanna Ivey, Dean Smilevski and Angelle Mackay were able to beat Geelong Grammar by 2 points with Angelle awarded the best speaker in the debate. A fantastic effort! Congratulations to all of them.

We are actively seeking to establish a year 7 and year 8 team over the next few weeks.  The next debate is next term.

Thank you for all the support from the school community.

TERM 2, 2023 - COOKING WITH OUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

“DUMPLINGS”

Each term, the International Students cook a delicacy from various countries and on the menu this Term were “dumplings”.

The International Students had such an amazing time making these dumplings but of course sharing their culture and food creations during their lunch time with Mr Dawson and the Principal Team.

This is a time for our International Students to not only further bond with each other, but they are able to discuss their cultures and share their experiences in Australia whereby beautiful memories are created.

This is just another memory that can be added to their already happy time studying at our college and being part of our community.

The Multicultural Committee met on Monday 29th May at lunchtime. We had a vibrant discussion about the theme of this year’s Multicultural Festival.  This annual grand event will be held on Friday 20th October at NGSC. Very soon we will announce the chosen theme to start preparations and outline a plan of what we want the Multicultural Festival to look like. If you want to part-take or have any ideas, feel free to contact the school or join us at our next meeting.

Watch this space for developments.

Our following meeting is scheduled for next term on Monday 24th July at 12:45pm.

For now, from the Multicultural Committee we hope you all keep warm and stay healthy over the winter holidays.

Izumiotsu Schools Visit

It is with great excitement that we can confirm an incoming visit from our Sister Schools in Osaka prefecture! We will have ten students and 4 teachers from Izumiotsu City staying from Friday 11th August until Friday 18th August. The students will participate in events at school and also day trips in the community. Therefore, we are holding an information session for any families interested in being a host for one of the Japanese students for a period of 7 nights. Hosting an international visitor can be a very enriching experience that often leads to long-term connections and friendships. Our information session will be on Wednesday 7th June from 5:30 pm in the Library.  Please direct any questions to Ms Phillipps or Ms Castle.

LOTE Lunchtime sessions - Week 9

At the end of the current term but before the winter break, the LOTE team will be running a variety of lunchtime activities to celebrate the LOTE curriculum and the cultural understanding it brings to us as a college. The official timetable will be posted soon, but students can look forward to activities such as a yodelling class or a chance to try on traditional Japanese kimono amongst many, many more.

Japanese Club

The Japanese club runs during lunchtimes on Wednesdays in L1 from 12:45 PM. In term 2 we are delving into filmmaking and Japanese. We will be running our first NGSC Japanese short film competition. This year the competition will be run on an open-age category basis. The following criteria apply:

  • no longer than 3 minutes (including credits)
  • contain mostly Japanese language in the script.
  • include the signature item: toothpaste (はみがきこ:hamigakiko).

Everyone is welcome at our Japanese Club. Come and join in and make movies! Please direct any questions to Ms Castle.

Year 7 and 8 Japanese

Our Year 7 and 8 students have been learning about food in Japan. Year 7 students have been learning about food culture and how to order food in a restaurant politely, and discuss their experience, while our Year 8 students have been learning how to discuss recipes in Japanese.  We have been learning the etiquette of using chopsticks within Japanese food culture.

As part of these units our students have been practicing their skills with おはし (ohashi) – chopsticks!

It has been a lot of fun to challenge ourselves to use these eating implements to sort various objects.

AudibookSync Free Audiobooks

AudiobookSYNC is a program of FREE audiobook for teens 13+.Two audiobooks are available each week through the Sora reading app from April 27 - August 2, 2023.

Each Thursday, beginning April 27, individuals can download to keep one or both of a pair of audiobooks to their Sora app shelf, thanks to the program co-host, OverDrive. Once downloaded, these audiobooks will be available whenever you want to listen. The only bit of tricky timing is that you have only one week in which to get the titles moved to your shelf; once the week ends at 11:59 PM US Eastern Time, the weekly pair is no longer available to move into your personal app.

SYNC is designed to enhance teen listening, teen access to great experiences with audiobooks, and teen exploration of genres, topics, and performance styles. It’s also the opportunity to learn about curating a personal collection, as participants can choose to download either or both of each week’s pair, or just a few during the season. Since there is no cost to participants, it’s a chance to take a chance on the unfamiliar. SYNC titles are available only to individual registrants. All SYNC participants need to register for the program is their email address. Concerned about the phrase “Find my school” in the Sora app? No worries! SYNC will be listed as the “school” for this program, and participants can access SYNC’s titles from anywhere in the world.
