Kendo Incursion
On Thursday 25th May, Gary Oliver, from the Ballarat Kendo club visited the college to conduct a Kendo workshop for all students currently studying Japanese.
Students learnt about the history of Kendo, including the methods of training used by the Samurai in medieval Japan. Students learnt to use the wooden Bokuto (training swords) to slice paper, performed drills with the bamboo Shinai (modern kendo sword) and helped to referee a Kendo match.
Here is what the students thought:
‘I liked learning about swords, the wooden Bokuto sword and the thick Shinai sword. I also liked learning about the armour samurais wore. It was fun!’ – Destin Yr 7
‘I enjoyed participating in the Kendo and learning about the history of Kendo and it's origins.’ - Noah Yr 9
‘It was a great experience to get to have a go at something from the Japanese culture.’ - Erica Yr 9
‘I enjoyed learning about the Japanese samurai and using the swords.’ - Lillian Yr 10
