What’s Been Happening in Year 3?

We have had a fabulous last few weeks in Year 3. We have been so impressed with each of our student’s dedication and growth in learning. The Year 3’s are taking more responsibility for their learning and achieving fantastic results. We have learnt so much this term and are all looking forward to the holiday break to rest, recuperate and reenergise!

There have been so many stand-out achievements this term. In our Inquiry unit on Australia, students have been able to compare what they knew before about our countries states, territories and capital cities and what they know now… and the results speak for themselves as there has been a huge improvement in each child’s knowledge. In our computer sessions with Mrs James, students have created their own information PowerPoints and learnt how to hyperlink, locate key information and photos online and they have explored many different editing tools to personalise their Australia projects.

Recently 3B and 3S participated in a STEM activity where they were challenged to create the longest paper chain, with only one sheet of A4 paper. Each group came up with fantastic ideas and very creative strategies to try and achieve the longest chain. This challenge also helped students work on their cooperation and team work skills. Congratulations to Abbey, Olivia and Henry who worked really well as a team and managed to make a very long, pink paper chain. Well done!

Students have been busy working hard at publishing two pieces of writing this term. They have published a persuasive writing piece on a topic they have personally chosen and spent time researching in class. The Year 3 teachers were blown away with our student’s passionate ideas and the amount of evidence they each found to back up their arguments. Our Year 3’s have also created their own creative writing piece with minor and major problems. They learnt how to hook the reader at the beginning of their story and how to build anticipation throughout their writing to keep the reader engaged.

Finally in Maths, we have been learning about length, area, mass and capacity. The Year 3’s have had a lot of fun testing out different types of scales and discovering the accuracy and efficiency of each one. They have learnt about informal and formal measurement and have practised converting between the different units. This week the Year 3’s revised their learning by creating Kahoots; a game-based trivia quiz. Students created their own questions and we had a lot of fun completing the trivia quizzes in groups on the last day of term.

Next term we are looking forward to Grade ¾ School camp at Arrabri Lodge! Please make sure any camp forms are returned to Mr A by Wednesday the 12th of July. We hope everyone has a safe and happy holidays and we will see you all in term 3.
