Year 1 Team Building Incursion

On Friday 19th May the Year 1s participated in a Team Building incursion with Supreme Incursions as part of our Inquiry Unit on Social and Emotional Learning.

The students in each grade were placed into 4 teams, chosen by the staff. Each team had a captain who was in charge of getting their team organised and in the right place at the right time.

The teams rotated around 4 different activities. The first was an Obstacle Course. Team members worked in pairs, with one person carefully navigating the course, and their partner standing by ready to support them if they lost their balance. Once both partners had been around once, they then had to carefully carry a dinosaur egg around the course without dropping it!

Another activity was to work with your team to design and build a dream house out of blocks. There were some fantastic houses created and a lot of fun was had smashing them at the end of each rotation! The students worked beautifully together to achieve their team goals, and it was so pleasing to watch and hear them sharing ideas and problem solving.

Next was the parachute activity, where groups of 2 or 3 students had to work together to move toys, one at a time, from one side of the room to the other on a little parachute with handles. This one required a lot of communication and coordination! If one person accidentally lowered their handles, the toys fell out and the group had to start again.

The activity I thought was the trickiest was the Hook and Hoop. Groups of students had to hold a hoop with a hook attached and collect various toys one at a time. Some were pretty easy, like the rubber duck with a hook on its head. Some were really challenging, like the Power Ranger who had to be hooked by its head, legs or arms! It was fantastic to hear students telling each other what a good job they were doing, and encouraging each other, as well as making suggestions and coordinating the height and angle of the hook and hoop.

The Year 1s had a fantastic time during this incursion, and it was so pleasing to see them work together so collaboratively and respectfully. In discussions afterwards, the students acknowledged that they had worked in teams and partnerships with people that they wouldn’t usually work with, and that they had actually enjoyed working with some different people! This has opened up some new friendships in the classroom and in the playground.
