Technologies Week

This week we celebrated the amazing work of the staff and students in the Technologies Department.  Projects in woodwork, engineering, digital technologies, foods, and textiles were showcased in the expo in the new Ignatius Centre.  The Year 11 Hospitality students made sliders for the staff to welcome them to the showcase.  During lunch, the foods teachers taught a class on making bubble tea. The students from the Woodworking Club displayed their projects and talked with students who are keen to join the Club next year. In digital technologies, the students joined in for a massive minecraft session at lunch.  The textiles teachers hosted a student design challenge to create a new school tie for the JTC student uniform and the week concluded with the engineering students working in the open lab at lunch.

As the school year is quickly coming to an end, we look forward to introducing some new projects for next year and seeing many more amazing student designs as the department continues to grow.

Magis Senior Chess Tournament

This week saw some very close matches. Several results were of note: Isaac Nikoloski (Year 6) beat Alex Kong (Year 2; the winner of the junior division of the Primary Chess Tournament). Josh Standen (Year 7) came out on top of Thomas Syminton (Year 10) and Robbie Douglass (Year 11) beat Daniel Doran also of Year 11. Isaac Fish lost by one point to Josh Williams of Year 11. A sign of his bright future in chess, Sam Travis (Year 3), narrowly lost to Tom Hudson (Year 10) after two sessions of intense game play. Matthew Gardner (Year 9) beat Thomas Goodman (Year 7) and James Mitchell won by forfeit.

The quarter finals of the Magis Chess Tournament will be held in the Library next Monday, 31 October at the start of lunch. The winners of these matches will then play in the semi finals later in the week, with The Magis Chess Tournament grand final will be played on Friday at lunchtime.

The quarter finals are:

  1. Ewan Fisher vs Isaac Nikoloski
  2. Josh Standen vs James Mitchell
  3. Josh Williams vs Tom Hudson
  4. Robbie Douglass vs Matthew Gardner

STEM Drone Club

The STEM Drone Club is still running on Wednesday afternoons. Due to the strong winds of late, we now meet outside B Block in the Library Courtyard. This is also good as there are lots of obstacles for the students to avoid, whilst flying the new Mavic Mini 3s.

If anyone would like to learn to fly a drone, they just need to meet us outside B Block when we fly.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

The Year 7’s adventure 'The Lost Mines of PhandelveI' is coming to a close before the end of Term 4. Currently, the two groups both play in the Library on a Thursday afternoon from 3:30pm until 5:00pm. The Years 8 & 9 group currently plays at lunchtime on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the Library.

Next year we will be looking for any new Dungeon Masters who wish to run their own campaigns. The Library has lost of modules that can be borrowed to allow adequate preparation time.

NAS Golf Tournament 2022

A big thank you to our NAS Golf team that represented the College in yesterday’s tournament at Wembley Golf Complex. The attitude and effort that all members displayed was of the highest caliber. Congratulations to Brad Cotrell and his Newman College squad for their excellent win; and, thank you also to Sacred Heart College for their effort and Paul Clement for helping to run the event.

Our John XXIII College representatives included Jovi Gibson, Jagger Neener, Tyler Field, Jack Whitaker and Elijah Zuvela who acquitted themselves very well to finish as runners-up on the day. Despite the ever-present nerves that accompany such an event, the players set aside any wayward shots to forge ahead with a positive energy and this stood them in good stead for an enjoyable tournament experience. Players have been preparing since late last term with practice sessions on the JTC ovals, short game practice at Wembley GC as well as 9 rounds on Monday afternoons with Newman College. I would personally like to thank the players for an excellent experience and for their wonderful conduct throughout.
