Performing Arts  Matters

What a wonderful night we had on Monday when we were finally able to screen our Climate Change Project Movies from 2022. Not only did we see 4 expertly made and acted films but we were treated to a range of live performances from our Drama Ensembles. A big shout out to Max Lenton and Eliot Sanders from Year 10 who provided some move music to add to the night. Awards were presented to a full Sarto Centre - you can see the list of winners in Ms Lindley’s article. Thank you to the staff who attended and helped judge the movies. Well done to Ms Lindley and the Drama Ensembles.

Congratulations also to the Intermediate Jazz Band and Mr Power for their support and performance at the Year 12 Internal Graduation at the Concourse yesterday: great music and well played.

Mrs Michelle Godfrey, the President of PAPA, has informed me that she is resigning her position after two fantastic years of support. We thank her for her service to the Performing Arts of the College and wish her well. Details for our AGM will be forthcoming early in Term 4. Don’t forget there will be a regular PAPA meeting on Monday 17 October at school, commencing at 7.00 pm. Please feel free to come along and support.

Climate Movie Showcase

We had a fantastic night on Monday when we were finally able to publicly show our Climate Movies: Air, Land, Ocean and St Pius … We also had an assortment of skits and monologues that had absolutely nothing to do with climate change. A big thank you to all students involved as well as those new to the Intermediate Ensemble who performed on the night. We had many parents and staff watching as well as a brilliant judging panel: Mrs Emma Fryar, Mr Mario Phaesie, Ms Felicity van Riet and Mr Anthony Timmins. Thank you to those teachers for giving up their time. These were the award winners:

  1. Best Opening Line – Spencer Cooper in the Air Movie
  2. Best C02 Emitter – Smoke Machine in the Air Movie
  3. Actor in Best Costume – Michael Cheah in the Ocean Movie
  4. Best use of Prop by an Actor  - Isaac Donlevy in the Land Movie
  5. Best Film was awarded to the team who made and acted in the St Pius … movie. A special mention to Zavier Dominici from Year 11 who wrote, filmed, and edited this movie! Best Film was an audience choice award.

Congratulations to all participants. We had a lot of fun writing and acting in the movies. It was brilliant to remain creative throughout the COVID experience and a special mention to Mr Couani for allowing us to do so and the school for funding the project. We worked with cblok who helped enormously with the development and filming. Tom Mesker, a professional writer, also worked as a dramaturg to support with script development and improvisations and was able to take my random ideas and help the students write scripts. You can view the films below:

The 39 Steps production

I can finally share with you the casting for our forthcoming whole school production: The 39 Steps to be performed at the Zenith Theatre in April 2023. Over 20 students from Year 7-10 auditioned for the play. Rehearsals will be on Mondays, Fridays and every other Sunday next term. All students will be called on Friday and Sunday of Week 1, Term 4 for rehearsals and a workshop with one of the lead actors from the original Australian production: Sam Haft who will join us on the first Friday. Mrs Emma Fryar will be working alongside me as the Drama Assistant helping with costumes and in a producer role which is most welcome.
