Senior Basketball

Thanks to all players for commencing the season with a trial v St Aloysius last Saturday. Great to blow the cobwebs out after a long winter and get some minutes in the legs.

Key dates:

  • Monday 10 October: Training resumes
  • Sat 15 October: ISA pre-season tournament at Oxford Falls (1sts and 2nds only)
  • Sat 22 October - ISA Rd 1
  • Sat 26 Nov – ISA Rd 6 (final game for this year)
  • Sat 4 Feb 2023 – Competition resumes – ISA Rd 7

Training:

Continues as per the schedule below. Still a DRAFT training timetable at this stage but I imagine minimal changes.

NB. Training for the term will conclude on Tuesday 20th Sept as Wednesday is now the final day of school due to the Queen’s Public Holiday. Training will resume in Term 4 on Monday 10th October (first day back).

Team Lists:

Teams continue to be amended as training and trial games occur. Teams for the ISA Season will be posted early next term.

Uniform:

All players should now be kitted out in the SPX Basketball Singlet and Shorts in preparation for the upcoming season.

Season Draw:

This is almost complete and will be posted in DRAFT form shortly. Whilst games times and venues for ‘Away’ games will not be entered, it will allow families some forward planning in terms of logistics.

NB. Age Groups correlate to school year, apart from 1st and 2nd V.

Therefore:     13’s = Yr 7,     14’s = Yr 8,    15’s = Yr 9,     17’s = Yr 10,     Opens = Yr 11

Athletics

Many of our athletes put in numerous hours at Rotary Athletic track, working under the guidance of our professional coaching team to prepare for the ISA and beyond.

Five Invitationals ensured a longer more meaningful season and athletes had a chance to hone their skills in the various disciplines. Having not had an ISA Carnival for 2 years it was hard to know where we were at for ISA. There were certainly many strong performances against the CAS and GPS Schools and new talent was unearthed.

ISA Carnival

Congratulations to Simon Magner and Chris Zilifian, named as joint Athletic Captains for Season 2022. On Tuesday they were tasked with leading the team as we ventured to SOPAC to compete in the top division against all the ISA Schools. There were too many fine results to list individually, however a few highlights:

Our Seniors got us off to the perfect start with Oliver Aylmer destroying the men in the Opens Shot and taking Gold. Ben O’Reilly then backed this up by breaking the ISA Triple Jump record, a huge feat!

Momentum continued for our middle-distance runners who came in hot on the back of their ISA Cross-Country success. Simon Magner took the 1500m and 3000m double whilst at the other end Harry Arnold won the 800m. Ben Fogale, Ryan Jom, Jacob Magner, Hamish Tooher and Chris Zilifian all hit the podium.

Our Sprinters were superb with dominant displays from our strong Intermediate and Senior teams - Matthew Hunt in hurdles and flat, PJ Marren, Nikolai Dimantha, Matteo Dall’Amico, Zach Flynn all excelling with a swag of Blue Ribbons in both the A and B races from our sprint team.

Meanwhile we picked up more big points in field events: Nick Brown, Lucas Hamill, Ryan Jom, Andrew May, Luca McCarthy, Liam Zoncape, Ben O’Reilly and Lucas Vivot all finishing top 3 in jumps and throws.

Finally in the double-point relays our intermediate team of Matthew Hunt, Matteo Dall’Amico, PJ Marren and Finley Peake blew the field away whilst a big finish from Sam Ferguson anchoring the team of Zach Flynn, Lucas Hammil and Chris Zilifian missed the win by the narrowest of margins but took an important 20 pts for Silver.

After a long day of competition we waited with trepidation as the Presentation began. Taking out the Intermediate and Senior Shields was massively exciting but then being named as ISA Division 1 Champions for the first time since 2012, a time when we had many National level athletes and a 10 second 100m runner, was enormous and showed what a collective effort this was from a close-knit team.

Congratulations to these students who were selected to represent ISA at the CIS Carnival:

I must thank Mr Couani and the College for their support of the Athletics Program and providing the resources and staffing to allow our athletes to compete strongly. Finally, to our coaches, including Matt North, Dom Pannozzo, Mrs Lee and Mr Dobb for their dedication and service over the course of the season – a sincere thanks.
