Year 5/6 Camp - Arura Group Stays, Port Hughes

In week 6, classes 404/1405/1408 went on camp. On the way there everyone was excited and everyone sang along to the lyrics of the songs on the bus ride. After we had lunch we got ready to do our first activity. For some people they went to the museum/the mines and for others they went to the beach to do some aquatic activities.

The next day everybody did beach activities, at the end we went to splash town and there were four water slides and a big bucket. If you stand under the bucket long enough water falls on you,  at the end of splash town one of our teachers went under the bucket and got saturated.

On the final day some groups did train rides/mines, museums. On the train rides we talked about copper and how it was mined/made, and in the museum we looked at how people did things like eat and transport around the mines when they were mining. Some groups also did beach activities. In beach activities, we did problem-solving, where we had to work with each other to get through obstacles, we did rock pooling, kayaking, snorkelling and raft building where you got to build a raft out of wood, rope, and floaties.

The food was great and ‘aussie hotdogs’ was definitely a fan favourite amongst the kids and the adults. On the way back home lots of people were tired and sleeping and were very happy to be going home to see their parents/family, and tell them about all the fun stuff we all did.

Thank you to all the teacher and parent volunteers for giving up their time to take us to Port Hughes.

To end off a wonderful year, 405, 1406 and 1407 went on an end of year camp excursion to Port Hughes Wilderness Escape Camp. On the way, some people sang along to the radio, everyone was looking forward to it and excited with lots of chatter.

At camp, the activities were: Kayaking, Snorkeling, Beach-Combing, Beach-Sports and Problem Solving. At the end of each day, everyone went to Splash Town, and it was a really fun experience. Splash Town is a small waterpark. During snorkeling and beach-combing we saw many sea-creatures including fish, starfish, crabs, and even a blue ringed octopus. In the late evenings, there would be a quiz night or talent show night, which were both really fun. There was also a large game of ultimate hide-and-seek chasey. Before the events there would be alot of games and sports happening on the big grassed area.

Before camp ended, we went to the Port Hughes Mining Museum and went on a train ride to show the mines. On the way back from camp, lots of people were tired and exhausted, some people even slept in the bus! Overall, camp was a very fun experience for everyone and is a great memory we'll all have forever.
