Athletics Carnival

Well what a day! Our 2022 Athletics Carnival was not what we are used to, but thanks to everyone who assisted on the day, we were able to complete all our events and even change locations half way through the day. It was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents supporting the children in their sporting endeavours. The children love seeing your familiar faces in the crowd.

A special mention to the following people who volunteered their time on the day; Sal Floyd and the P&F for keeping our energy levels up with all the goodies at the canteen, the Lion’s Van for our delicious lunch, Michael Brummell, Julie Watson, Adriana Pietsch, Kylie Neville, Narelle Pietsch, Carly Doust, Krystle Nugent, Steven McAllister, Linda Bruce, Matt Falconer (amazing announcer who has this job for life), Michelle Hancock, Shanelle Gunther, Alise McBain, Michelle Lawler, Sue-Ellen Cooper, Mark Barratt, Nicole Watson, Tess Lonergan, Jasvir Beniwal, Renata Davis, Kate Burren-Wehr, Colleen McLeod and Tahleia Gerlofsma. Our wonderful High School students: Alex Wright, Louisa Beatty, Charlotte McHarg and Jada Kerr, your help at the field events was greatly appreciated. Lyn Cregan who baked some slices for our volunteers and anyone else who jumped in to help on the day at the last minute, thank you.

In preparing for this carnival there were many people behind the scenes who helped to make it a success. In particular, Casey Chard who had most of the carnival organised last term, had to give up a lot of her time to pass the information on to me, including taking many phone calls and answering a multitude of questions. Thank you Casey! Richard Taylor at the High School, who had everything ready for us to use at their grounds, John Lynn and the Show Society for preparing the Showground for us and the Council who marked the lines at the two locations for us. All the staff members at St Joey’s also jumped in and helped where they saw a need, your assistance did not go unnoticed.

Congratulations to all the students for their enthusiastic participation in all the events. You should be very proud of yourselves. Well done to all the prize winners who are mentioned below, in particular Penola, the winning house for the day. Mackillop will get you next year.

ICPSC Northern Region Rugby League Finals - Port Macquarie

Thursday 4th August 2022 is a date our Open Boys Rugby League team will never forget. Sixteen of our very talented St Joseph’s boys travelled to Port Macquarie to represent the Armidale Diocese in the Independent and Catholic Primary Schools Challenge held in Port Macquarie. Here, they competed against three other teams to see which team was the best in the Northern Region of NSW.

Their first game was against Rosary Park Catholic School, Branxton. They came away with a win 10 to 4. Try scorers in this game were Pat Wright and Fletcher Barratt with one try converted by Harrison Bailey. Game two was against Our Lady Star of the Sea, Terrigal. Joey’s won convincingly 18 to 6. Bobby Chard, Ethan Graham and Pat Wright were the try scorers with conversions to Aden McBain, Fletcher Barratt and Harrison Bailey. The final game, which ended up becoming like a grand final, as both teams were undefeated up to this point of the day, was against St Peter’s Primary, Port Macquarie. Port Macquarie came out firing, scoring two quick tries and obtaining a lead of 10 nil by half time. St Joseph’s started to settle into the game well, in the second half, matching their larger opponents with grit and determination. Pat Wright scored early in the second half. This try was converted by Harrison Bailey to put us well in contention for this game at 10 points to 6. Unfortunately, towards the end of the game, Port Macquarie scored again sealing the win at 16 to 6 and taking out the accolades as the winner of the Northern Region. They will now play in Sydney against the winner of the Southern Region on the 25th August.

Congratulations to the following boys: Bobby Chard, Patrick Wright, Lachlan Grob, Brynn Biddle, Archie Parish, Chilli Teinaki, Brian Hancock, Toby Adams, Aden McBain, Dustin McBain, Ethan Graham, Fletcher Barratt, Tom Pietsch, Harrison Bailey, Sam Barratt and Jimmy Chard. These students represented our school and themselves with pride and excellent sportsmanship. This was a wonderful experience for these boys and their families, which will be an event that will never be forgotten.

We extend a huge thank you to Andrew and Michelle Hancock for transporting the team and their families to Port Macquarie as well as to the coaches Shad Bailey and Mark Barratt. Your generosity in giving up your time to train and encourage these students is greatly appreciated by the team, the parents and the staff at St Joseph’s. Thank you!
