2023 VETDSS Courses Opening Soon

Year 10 and 11 students who are planning to follow a Training Direct or Uni Transition pathway at John XXIII College in 2023 and/or 2024 are encouraged to consider applying to study a Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS) course at North Metropolitan or South Metropolitan TAFE. Places in NMTAFE and SMTAFE VETDSS courses are limited. Interested students are encouraged to apply to their desired course, online, as soon as application open.

The 2023 Noth Metropolitan TAFE VET Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS) guide can be accessed here. Applications open on 18th July and close 31st August 2022.

South Metropolitan TAFE’s 2023 VETDSS applications open 1st July and close 31st August 2022. Here is the guide:

All students who apply to study a VETDSS course will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. Anyone can create a USI here. In their TAFE VETDSS application form, students should list Ms. Hedley’s details for their VET Coordinator.

I would like to remind students and families that John XXIII College also has relationships with other privately run Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that offer VETDSS. Qualifications ranging from a Cert II to Cert IV are available in areas such as Electrotechnology, Business, Fitness, Screen and Media, Nursing Preparation and more. Students and families are encouraged to get in contact with Ms. Hedley to find out more about courses run by private RTOs.

JTC Year 10 Pathway Planning Day

Over the course of Semester 1 in their weekly Pathway Planning classes, our Year 10 students have been developing their understanding of their own strengths, interests and values, and how those aspects of themselves align with particular career pathways. At the Year 10 Pathway Planning Day on Wednesday 29th June, students consolidated their understanding of the study pathways open to them in Year 11 and 12 at John XXIII College. They listened to Head of Learning Areas who shared information about the various subjects on offer. Students were then treated to a Pathways Expo in the Thomas Moore Exhibition Centre, featuring representatives from all the WA Universities, both TAFE Colleges, several private Registered Training Organisations and some industry representatives. The College received wonderful feedback from the Expo exhibitors, who praised our students for their engagement and curiosity.

University Course Guides: 2023

Before applying to study a course, students looking to engage in tertiary study at university (particularly Year 12 students) should spend some time browsing through university course guides to gain an awareness of all courses and majors of interest. Most universities add and/or change courses and course majors from year to year. Here are some links to the 2023 course guides for WA universities. Be sure to look for the undergraduate guides in the first instance:

Curtin New ATAR Achievement Scholarship

How much will it cost you to go to uni?

Curtin introduced a new Scholarship for 2023 to encourage students to focus on their studies in Year 12. The ATAR Achievement Scholarship provides a payment of $3,000 to year 12 applicants who achieve a final ATAR three points above their predicted ATAR score.

The ATAR Achievement Scholarship applies to undergraduate courses except the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.

Applying for the scholarship is easy – students simply apply for admission to a Curtin course through TISC with Curtin as their first preference.

Applicants who achieve an ATAR of 96+ will be awarded the Curtin Excellence Scholarship which is of higher value.

Science and Engineering: Bachelor of Science in 2023 will have double majors, minors and specialisations. Entry into Bachelor of Science ATAR will be 70 in 2023 (note: some courses may still have prerequisite requirements).

Curtin Increases Entry Requirements for Teacher Education Degrees

As part of its quest to develop outstanding teachers, Curtin has diversified and intensified its entry requirements:

Non-academic entry requirement:

Curtin University School of Education Qualtrics Questionnaire for all applicants

For entry to initial teacher education (ITE) courses, you will need to meet both the academic and non-academic entry requirements.

To meet the non-academic entry requirements, applicants must demonstrate they have the key characteristics, attributes and motivations common to effective teachers, as outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

To demonstrate this, you will need to complete an online Qualtrics questionnaire as part of your application. The questionnaire must be completed no more than one year prior to application.

AIS Elite Athlete Education Network

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) facilitates an Elite Athlete Education Network (EAEN) through partnered Universities, TAFE’s and other education providers, which helps to support elite athletes for the duration of their course study. This ensures their experience on campus is one that is rewarding, flexible and helps them acquire the right skills and qualifications needed to follow their passions and interests outside of sport.

Each AIS endorsed university will have an Elite Athlete Student Coordinator to support athlete experience on campus and implement the underpinning guiding principles of the Elite Athlete Education Network.

Endorsed members of the EAEN commit to a range of guiding principles and minimum standards through consultation with the AIS. This is a national network that supports Australian athletes within the high-performance sport system.

This is a Commonwealth government mentoring program designed to support girls and women in trade careers. The Busy sisters mentoring program runs over 6 months and provides weekly support from Tradeswomen.

With fancy bricklaying, the future of skilled bricklayers is looking good. This video is about a new bricklaying apprenticeship program

New Strategy for Women in Turf Management

Turf Management is one of the most gender segregated trades with women only representing 1.4% of the workforce. The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association has designed a strategy to encourage more women into the industry.

The strategy includes:

Raising awareness of options for year 10 – 12
A regional industry engagement plan that connects schools with sport and recreation facilities.
Supporting a Cert II Pre apprenticeship program.

Applications for Alcoa’s 2023 apprentice intake will open towards the middle of the year.

$500 Tool Rebate from Construction Industry Workers

If you are working and training in the construction industry between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023 you can reclaim up to $500 of your costs through an apprentice tool allowance.

VET numbers are booming

The McGowan government worked to address West Australia’s skills shortages by spending millions of dollars upgrading TAFE facilities and by making VET courses free or low cost in areas like agriculture, civil construction, childcare, aged care and disability care.

$76.5 million has been added to 2022 – 23 State budget to create even more training places by:

boosting the defence industry's professional and para-professional workforce,
supporting WA's in-demand construction industry and
helping mature-aged jobseekers into jobs.

Defence Industry Career Advice

A dedicated defence industry team is available at the Rockingham Jobs and Skills Centre to provide advice about jobs, careers, and training pathways into the defence industry.

All services are free, and available to anyone in WA!

Army Support Gap Year

Experience being part of one of the largest logistics organisations in Australia during your Army Gap Year.

An Army Support Gap Year role is a unique opportunity for students to experience life in the Army, without needing to make a long-term commitment. The skills obtained through the Army Support Gap Year program will provide them valuable work and life experience, which are transferable to civilian employment opportunities. It enables Gap Year members personal and professional development for their next endeavour.

In an Army Support role, recruits will learn logistic and task management skills to ensure the Army has the necessary supplies for exercises and humanitarian operations. Gap Year recruits can experience what life in the Army is like in one of three rewarding Army Support Gap Year roles. They may assist in the movement of supplies as a Driver, manage logistics as a Warehouse Coordinator, or become the point of contact within a unit as an Administration Assistant.

Cabin Crew (ADF Gap Year) 2023

Provide safety, comfort and in-flight service to passengers and crew on board specialised aircraft, while enjoying a fulfilling 12-month taste of life in the Air Force. Air Force Cabin Crew play a vital role in ensuring the safety, security and comfort of military personnel and civilian passengers such as Government ministers, Australian and foreign heads of state, royalty, and guests of the Australian government, onboard an aircraft.

1 July Pinnacle Foundation Scholarships for 2023 Open (LGBTIQ+applicants)

The Pinnacle Foundation provides educational scholarships, mentoring and opportunities for young LGBTIQ Australians.

Scholarships are awarded for fulltime study at public institutions of higher education in Australia.

Eligibility

Scholarships are open to LGBTIQ Australians who meet the criteria detailed below:

Australian citizen or permanent resident (proof required during application stage)
At least 18 years of age and younger than 27 years of age on 20 January in each year for which the scholarship is sought
Have achieved good or reasonable scholastic results given your circumstances
Will be undertaking fulltime studies
Identify as a member of the LGBTIQ community.

2022 SCSA Year 12 Handbook Part I

YEAR 10 IN FOCUS

The John XXIII Year 11 Handbook has been updated and is accessible to parents via SEQTA. It is a great idea for students and families to spend some time discussing subject options for Year 11 and 12 as well as possible pathways after school- the two are very much connected. Year 10 students have been exploring pathways and careers in their weekly Pathway Planning classes and have experienced their Pathways Expo on Wednesday 29 June.

Students who wish to study Vocational Education and Training (VET) in 2023 (off campus, one day per week) at either North Metropolitan or South Metropolitan TAFE should apply to their desired course as soon as applications open- refer to the information and links to TAFE course guides earlier on page X of this newsletter. Students who wish to study other VET courses offered at private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) should get in contact with Ms. Hedley to let her know about their interests.

ABCN Scholarships Open for 2023

Year 10 students are invited to apply for ABCN mentoring and financial scholarships for the 3-year 2023 – 25 program. The scholarships are for exceptional students who face economic, family, or social challenges.

Successful applicants receive $7,000 in financial aid over 3 years. Scholars will also be matched with a dedicated corporate mentor from ABCN’s extensive list of corporate partners. The mentor will work with the scholar to encourage school engagement and transition to further education and training; helping to develop skills, growth mindsets, aspirations, and connections. The program also enables workplace exposure for scholars who may never have had an opportunity to experience a corporate environment before this program.

School Based Traineeships in the Public Sector for 2023

The public sector School-based Traineeship provides students entering Year 11 an exciting opportunity to gain on the job experience through paid employment.

Over the 18 month traineeship students work towards a Certificate II in Government (Public Administration) which counts towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

Around July each year the Public Sector Commission calls for applications from Year 10 public and private school students and supports agencies with recruitment. Find out more below.

National Pitchfest Competition

Pitchfest and Village Cinemas have joined forces to create the ultimate school excursion and pitching competition, teaching students how to solve problems and bring ideas to life - in the cinemas. Students can enjoy the cinematic experience and learn fundamental skills at the same time! Details here.

Respect Stories competition

Students aged 10-14 years old are encouraged to enter the 2022 Respect Stories competition.

To enter, students are invited to produce a short story, poem or essay of up to 1,000 words, or an illustration, exploring what respect means to them.

This is a great opportunity for students to reflect on and share their understanding of respect – while also encouraging parents and teachers to have open, ongoing and proactive conversations on this important issue.

Eight written and two illustrative winning entries will be published in a national Respect Stories book. The winners will also take home a $500 VISA gift card for themselves and one for their school.

Challenge your contemporary dance technique, build skills in creative practice and choreography, collaborate with other young people passionate about dance and feel a part of a youth dance experience.

The course is designed for young people who are either intending to pursue dance as a career or who simply love dance and would like to continue to improve their dance skills. Each Term will culminate in a short sharing for family and friends.

River Rangers for Year 5 and 6 students

River Rangers is a primary school cadet program for students in Years 5 and 6.

It seeks to engage and educate the next generation of children to help us protect our local rivers. River Rangers allows students to actively investigate local issues and design, evaluate and share the results of their projects with other schools and the wider community.

Conservation projects undertaken by River Rangers include tree planting, litter pick-ups, bird and bat box building, biodiversity surveys, water quality testing and building native gardens.

Genius Armoury opportunity for Neurodiverse People

Genius Armoury offers a range of courses to help introduce neurodiverse individuals to cybersecurity, exploring some of the fundamentals of coding, threats, and exploits, networking, and more. Available to anyone and free to complete, modules only take around 30 minutes to complete.

Successful completion of the program may provide eligibility to those located in Western Australia for enrol in a Bachelor of Science course in Cybersecurity at Curtin without an eligible ATAR, through the Portfolio entry system.

Active Foundation disability industrial worksites to stay open for another 18 months

In May Active Foundation announced it was to close its 7 large-scale industrial work sites in July.

This decision was to impact 750 workers.

The next day Don Punch, WA Minister for Disability Services, was on the radio saying that he had been in touch with Bill Shorten, who was about to become the Commonwealth Minister for Disability Services.
The State and Federal government have now come together to enable Active’s workshops to remain open until the end of 2023. They will then close.

Active has announced that is wants to get out of the large, supported employment model.

When Active made its announcement, the Community Skills Training Council started working across industries to see if they could identify work experience for students.

No doubt the Community Skills Training Council will be close to decision makers and will pass on news as it comes to hand.

The Autism Academy for Software Quality Assurance (AASQA) aims to enable individuals on the autism spectrum to leverage their unique talents through training, educating and mentoring programs, so as to create pathways to employment; whilst addressing the business needs of the Australian ICT industry facing challenges in attracting and retaining software testers within the sector.
