CELEBRATION OF LEARNING @ ST. FIDELES

Thank you to all who attended the celebration of learning afternoon and to the teachers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the students had this opportunity to share their learning. As I walked around the learning spaces, it was great to see the smiles on the students’ faces and the look of pride as they shared achievements. The learning on display was impressive and the students should be very proud of their efforts.

I am looking forward to another great term of learning.

SUSTAINABILITY - Annette Gasbarro

As a learning community of St Fidelis and in partnership with Bunnings Coburg, we are delighted to announce that we are working towards establishing a Sustainability program at St Fidelis from Foundation to 6. Throughout our Discovery program, our F-2 learners and a selection of keen 3/4 gardeners have been busy preparing our vegetable garden.

We began by revisiting our 5 big plastic planter tubs which are located across from the Foundation area.  Our gardeners have been busy weeding and preparing the soil for planting.  Our gardeners discovered that for plants to grow they need lots of water, sun and compost. As a group, we researched various simple ways that we can fertilize our garden.  We discovered that a simple yet effective way to fertilize our garden would be to make a “Worm Compost Tower.”

To make a compost worm tower you need a PVC pipe, screw cap and a drill. We contacted Mr Watson, an expert on PVC pipes, and asked if he could assist us in making our worm with the PVC pipes.  A group of children wrote letters and drew pictures of a compost tower to send to Mr Watson.

Dear Mr Watson,

We are making a vegie garden, are you able to help us, if you can.  Can you please give us a pipe and can you please put some holes in it? From Felix Carr 1/2AP

Dear Mr Watson we are getting our garden beds ready. Can you please give us 5 pipes with holes in them and lids for the pipes? Thank you, From Giorgio 1/2

As a school community, we thank Mr. Watson for providing us with 5 PVC pipes, lids and drilled holes. Our “Worm Compost Towers” are ready to be installed into our garden beds. The food scraps are placed into the PVC pipe and the worm castings act as the composting agent.  The worms crawl into the tube via the drilled holes, eat the food and spread the compost throughout the garden bed.

Thank you to the Hude family.

We extend our thanks to the Hude family for their kind generosity in providing our school community with a Bunnings voucher donation.  This voucher will be used to purchase items that will assist us in our garden.  Thank you kindly much appreciated.

Bunnings Workshop

Last Wednesday, our Foundation - 2 learners and some keen 3/4 gardeners engaged in a Bunnings workshop.  The children planted pansies and painted terra cotta pots. Thank you to Stephanie and Kelly from Bunnings Coburg for donating all the pots, plants, paint and soil.  Thank you also for providing this great learning opportunity for our children.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT - Leanne Wenckowski

Thank you to the families who have joined me for Story Time on a Monday afternoon from 2:30 - 3:30'pm. This week is our third session and I am looking forward to seeing everyone back during Term 3. The pre-school children and toddlers have had time and opportunity to play as they arrive at the session, then a story is read and an activity completed which is linked to the story they have listened to. Also, all attendees get a chance to borrow a book or two to read at home. The books are taken home in a library bag which all the children have decorated themselves.

Happy holidays everyone, see you back for Story Time on Monday 11th July!

I am also attaching a letter about becoming the Parent Representative for your child’s class. Please read the letter, and if you are interested in the role as a Parent Rep, please email me by Friday 24th June. My email is: lwenckowski@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au

I will be having a meeting during the first couple of weeks in Term 3 to go through the expectations and other information regarding the Parent Representative Role.

Kind regards,

Leanne
