Performing Arts

Howdy all!

This term sure did fly by!  We’ve been very busy in Performing Arts putting together performances (both solo and group) which will be included in the portfolios for you all to enjoy during Student Lead Conferences.  In addition, behind the scenes, we have been working on the Trinity School Concert for 2022. Recently, we had auditions and we were thoroughly impressed with those students who showed a lot of courage in coming into auditions with songs, monologues, and dances prepared, displaying their talents and their passion for the Arts.  You can’t see it, but I’m giving them another huge round of applause!

Meanwhile in class, Prep students have been practising their characterisation of fairy tale characters- moving around, changing their voices, and even ad-libbing to bring the characters in the story to life.  Year 1/2 students have become very in tune with the upset crayon characters in the story that we have read together.  They are able to show a character’s emotion through their movement and gesture and they’ve been working on imbuing this emotion in their voices while they deliver their monologues as their chosen crayon.  Year 3/4 students are in the process of reviewing their initial recordings of their puppet show, placing them in the position of the audience - to see what the audience will see when they perform live in the final week of the term.  This allows students to self-assess and consider what can be changed to improve their group performances.  Year 5/6 students are also in the process of reviewing the recordings of their dramatic readings.  Within this group performance they have been working on levels and staging to create visual interest, increase dramatic tension, and show the relationships between characters.  They have also been putting effort into understanding character motivation and have been engaging in character study: creating a background story for the character to better understand what they want.

In the final week of this term, when our learners get to share what they’ve been working on, not just in performing arts, but in all areas of their schooling, I know you’ll be just as proud of them as I am!

Students in 1/2TB show how lonely and invisible the White Crayon feels during a warm up Character Walk.  A Character Walk encourages students to embody emotions and assists in building further characterisation.

Students in 5/6MG rehearse their dramatic reading.  During blocking rehearsals students annotated their scripts to show when and where their characters would move.  This blocking (movement) adds visual interest and incorporates dramatic elements such as levels to a scene.

Students in Prep CD show off their reactions when Goldilocks is discovered still sleeping in Baby Bear’s bed.  By approaching the story through the emotional lens of a character, learners begin to think about why drama occurs in stories.
