Learning in J09

Miss Bakker

Junior School J09 Bakker is sharing the learning taking place in their class…

On Monday the 20th of June, J09 students participated in ‘Monster Day’ to practise learning our /er/ sound! We began the day with a monster hunt and went looking for monsters around the school. Each monster had a word, and we wrote down the words as we found each one! Luckily, we managed to find all the hiding monsters and J09 were very happy with their work.

We then made Monster crowns that were full of words with the /er/ sound. J09 students did a fantastic job thinking of a range of /er/ words that contained other spellings for our focus sound including /ir/ or /ur/ or /ear/. Here are some just to name a few: river, mermaid, turn, girl, burst, fern, skirt, turn, twirl, search, pearl, burger, hurt.

Students then made Monster biscuits with icing and all sorts of yummy lolly treats to make the monster’s features! Check out our awesome creations! J09 were very creative and added eyeballs, mouths, tentacles, hair, arms and legs to their biscuits. We then took these out to the Garden Area to have a Monster picnic with the other Year One classes.

To finish off the day, J09 made place value monsters to keep in line with our Mathematics topic of Place Value. Students made a 2-digit number of their choice using sticks of tens as the monster’s hair or arms and ones as its teeth. What creative Year Ones we have in J09!

We have now finished learning all the Little Learner’s Love Literacy Stage 7.2 sounds and our Monster Picnic was a great way for students to revise these sounds (ar, or, aw, ir, ur, er, air). If your child is in Year One, don’t forget to check out their Phonics Book so they can practise these sounds at home and build their confidence when seeing them in words..
