Killara Academy

Last week the students of Killara Academy participated in a car maintenance workshop provided by Gal Matic which was aimed at helping our teenagers on their journey to becoming safer drivers by providing them with knowledge and skills for basic car maintenance.

They learnt when and how to check the engine to keep it running smoothly and safely, what they can and can’t touch in the engine bay and how to care for tyres and check their pressure. The students learnt about checking the oil, the coolant, the windscreen washer fluid, battery and hoses. They had hands-on experience changing a tyre, including working a jack.

The students were engaged while they learnt valuable skills by using real-world examples and hands-on experience. An interesting and informative workshop held after school in the school quadrangle.

Comments by some of the students included ‘it is useful to know where to find things in the engine and the boot, where there are secret compartments.’ and also ‘it will be very useful in the future when we might be stranded. We will be prepared.’
