GEKA Brady Road

'Know your Street' Project

GEKA Brady Road Educators

The children were invited to partner with the Rotary Club of Caulfield, in the ‘‘Cityscape: Know Your Street’ Project!  This was the perfect project for children to be involved in, as they regularly visit their local community and know a lot about the streets in which they live!

Children’s representations of their local community have been on display in the window of the community hub in Murrumbeena.

As educators, we discussed the project with children during group time.  We asked the children “What things are in our kindergarten’s street?  The children gave lots of valuable answers, demonstrating what they already know about their world!  To extend this thinking, we decided to go out on a walk and have a good look around, to see if there were more things we could discover!  We took photos of all the landmarks that the children had spoken of earlier at group time, including different types of letterboxes, different types of houses, roundabouts in roads, buses, the playground, new homes being built and more.

The children all love being out and about in the community.

The Early Years learning Framework (2009), Outcome 2, highlights the children being connected with and contributing to their world.  This is evident when the children explore and discover some connections amongst people.

The children’s ideas and observations began as a one-dimensional, flat, foldable drawings of our street.  Then the children began to stick their creations on using a 3D construction collage method.  Our various ideas came together, creating a fabulous representation of out kindergarten streetscape – GEKA Brady Road – it had such detail that we were all really impressed with the children’s accuracy.

The educators were very impressed at the continuous help from the children on this project.  They all took great pleasure and pride in their work.
