The Lemonade Stand

GEKA Bentleigh Educators

Having a bumper crop of lemons this year, teacher, Karen, has shared them with the kindergarten community.

Jade’s mum, Tessa, asked if she could make lemonade with the children, using some of the lemons. We welcome the involvement of families and agreed eagerly!  We decided we would ask for a silver coin donation to buy a cup of ‘homemade lemonade’, and the money raised would be used to by a book for our kindergarten.  We set the date for Wednesday the 9th October and Tessa organised the announcement through Flexibuzz.

On Monday we talked with the children about our plans to make lemonade. The group was very enthusiastic and we had lots of offers for more lemons. “Nana has a lemon tree, I can bring some.”

Tessa and the children made the lemonade. Children had a great time juicing the lemons!

We decided to open the lemonade stand from 3pm, as that’s when families start arriving to collect children.  Max’s mum, Priscilla, came to help.  It was a huge success!  Not only did our kindergarten children enjoy the lemonade, but their families also bought cups of our yummy home-made lemonade too and spent some valuable time with children in the program before going home.

Our thanks goes to parent, Tessa, for organising such a fun, real-life experience for the children.  Who knows, you may have inspired some children to take up a future in cooking through the use of the lemons.

Creating an environment where families are respected and are actively encouraged to collaborate with educators about curriculum decisions, is important and valued.  This experience gave our children and families a sense of belonging, where everyone was able to contribute toward a common goal. And it was a fun too!
