White Ribbon Day
Dear students, staff and our Cecil community,
On Thursday 18 November, four members of the SRC represented Cecil Hills High School and participated in a Zoom event with 15 other schools from the Cowpasture Network for White Ribbon Day.
This White Ribbon Day, there is a strong focus on the action men can take to end domestic violence against women. After discussing with students from other schools, we walked away understanding the complexities that drive enforced gendered violence, structural inequalities and behaviours that enable violence behind closed doors. We also now understand that the foundation for changing social attitudes, behaviours and system is by being informed and promoting change.
In particular, three things we would like to pass on to everyone in our community is:
1. Every student has the right to feel safe - male or female.
2. The behaviour you walk past is the behaviour you accept.
3. Be an upstander not a bystander. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell a mate to be quiet when they are saying the wrong thing, but it needs to be done. You don’t need to get into a fight. Just simply say ‘stop’.
Next year, our aim is to get one of the presenters to come out to our school to speak to us all so that we can work together to make a difference.
