RESPECT: Students in Year 9 Environmental Studies have started their community partnership with the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA). Over the next two terms they will be undertaking environmental education, conservation activities including weeding and native planting, as well as researching some of the history of the Surf Coast.
UNITE: Last Monday, we had our Year 11 Connect day. The day had three themes: Connect to our Future, Connect to yourself and Connect to each other. Students explored pathways and finance in connect to our future. They explored 'Party Safe' and were exposed to some of the consequences of risk-taking behaviour in 'Connect to Yourself'. After lunch, students had the opportunity to engage in some mindfulness activities or laser tag. A very special thanks to our guest speakers for their time, sharing their own stories and knowledge with our students.
STRIVE: Our Year 12 Biology students were lucky enough to head to the Gene Technology Access Centre in Melbourne to investigate real life features and applications of the immune system response and how stakeholders like farmers use medical technology to respond to pathogenic outbreak in their own cattle. Students used models and biotechnological tests to determine cause of infection and a specific response to eliminate the threat to a herd of cattle!
RESPECT: As part of our unit on Food Sovereignty and Food Security Year 12 Food Studies, students undertook an immersive Ethiopian experience. Students engaged with a case study following a young girl Cheru and the lengths she had to go in order to get drinking water. Whilst not quite the 6km Cheru has to walk, students had to fetch all the water they required for both cooking and cleaning from the rainwater tanks on Greg's shed. All students fully embraced this task and showed both resilience and empathy. The final result was a Berbere spiced Ethiopian lentil and tomato soup.
FLOURISH: Our Year 11 & 12 textile students are busy this morning, cutting, crafting, and sewing products. Messenger bags, tote bags, beanies and bucket hats are just some of the amazing creations being made by these VCE students.
Be sure to check in in a few weeks’ time for the finished projects!
STRIVE: Our Vocational Major students went to Buckley, working with the Shire to do a carbon offset tree planting activity.
The trees planted will pull carbon from the atmosphere down into the soil, to prevent the planet warming. 20 trees planted is roughly equivalent to one persons carbon footprint from driving a car for the year.
Our students planted around 60 plants, which we hope to return and water. A great job by our VM students in some challenging windy conditions!
FLOURISH: The Vocational Major students caught the train to Melbourne and navigated the Public Transport route to Fed Square.
They walked over to ACMI (Australian Centre of the Moving Image) to learn about the evolution of digital image technology through an interactive tour.
They made 3D Flip motion books and had the opportunity to play other moving image games, dating back to the original Nintendo.
A great day out and excellent opportunity to explore the digital image industry!
FLOURISH: Year 12 Art Making and Exhibiting students are currently producing their last piece of work for VCE! It’s an exciting time and they are demonstrating incredible resilience and hard work. Last week they visited the gallery space that will exhibit their final works in early November to help visualise their show layout and learn the unique features of the gallery space ~ Keep an eye out for your invite to Artwave 2023 at Hoop Gallery!
UNITE: On Thursday the 3rd August, the Year 12 Culture Committee (the Year 12 student voice group) put on a Morning Tea and PJ Day for the Year 12 VCE cohort. The group got busy baking for their peers on Wednesday afternoon before hosting the morning tea complete with music, board games and even a spirted game of limbo in the Senior Study Centre!
The Committee felt it was important to take a pause from their studies, check in with one another and their mentors, and make some memories together as their time at SCSC is fast coming to a close!
UNITE: Congratulations to the 19 students who attended junior volleyball on Monday 7th August. The girls team played a great opening game, beating Matthew Flinders in two tie breaking sets. The girls then played a solid North Geelong team, who although we lost both sets (10:20 and 13:20), played a good effort. In a consolation game against Lara, the girls won convincingly 20:13 and 20:17!
It was a joy to have Pre Service Teacher Doyle Madigan coach the boys team. The boys won one of their three matches against solid competition, including eventual finalist, Northern Bay College.
