Crazy Hair Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Friday 4 August is Crazy Hair Day at St Joseph’s and is part of the lead up to the Spring Fair.

Below are some expectations that students have been made aware of and may be of assistance to parents and carers.

  • Students are required to wear their school uniform or sports uniform (even if it is not sports day)
  • Hair below shoulder length is not to be worn out but must be tied back, plaited- including multiple plaits or a half up-half down style.
  • Ensure hair is not covering the face.
  • Hair may be coloured but the colour must be easily washed out so that hair is returned to normal by Monday morning.
  • Ensure anything added to hair, such as colours, will not have the potential to damage school property or harm other students.
  • No crazy haircuts as per the school policy
  • Gels may be used in order to have a crazy hairstyle for the day
  • Wigs may be worn.

We are looking forward to a fun day. Please see the SJB Spring Fair Page information in the newsletter regarding donations for the fete on Crazy Hair Day.

Note:  Year 1 donation is coloured hairspray

Mathematics

Kindergarten

When Kindergarten students were given the open-ended Mathematics task of deciding which animals could be on a farm if only 10 legs could be seen, they stepped up to the challenge. As part of their learning students participated in a gallery walk to view each other's work.

Year 4

Year 4's Mathematics open-ended challenge included a link to their unit on area. They had to come up with the least number of squares to cover a rectangle 8 x 9 units. Kirby and Arkie were able to solve the problem with fewer squares than Mrs Walls. Well done boys!

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence (NDA) is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative for schools, encouraging whole-school communities to work together to implement evidence-informed positive and proactive solutions to prevent and address bullying.

The NDA will be held on Friday 18 August.

In 2022, 68% of Australian schools joined together to say - Bullying. No Way! The NDA is an opportunity to create a shared understanding of what bullying is and show support to students who may be experiencing bullying.

The NDA theme for 2023 is 'Growing Connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.

St Joseph's will join in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on Friday the 18 August. Students will participate in activities and webinars, and view videos linked to the theme of 'Growing Connections'. We will conclude our day with an assembly organised by Year 6.

NSWPSSA Championships

A huge congratulations to London C in Year 6 who represented the MacKillop Netball team at the NSW PSSA Championships last week. The MacKillop team came 3rd overall and London gained selection in the NSW Team. Wow, an outstanding achievement for a very talented sportswoman. London will now represent NSW at the National Championships in Perth in September. We wish her continued success. Well done London!

Senior Soccer Gala Day

Years 5 and 6 students travelled to Unanderra for the Senior Boys and Girls Soccer Gala Day last Friday. A cold start to the morning quickly heated up, just like the energy and enthusiasm our students brought to their games! All students demonstrated their amazing SJB spirit and sportsmanship as they played each game within the guidelines of Gala Day values - to have fun and share the sport they love with students who might be trying it out for the first time. Our Senior boys and girls shared positions on the field, cheered for each other when they weren’t playing, and helped out with other teams when needed. A huge thank you to the many organisers of the day, and to the parents who came to manage teams, to watch, and to support wherever they could. These days wouldn’t happen without you!

Junior Soccer Gala Day

Six teams from Years 3 and 4 participated in the Junior Soccer Gala Day on Friday. The teams joined in the spirit of the day - to have fun and play with sportsmanship in non-competitive, friendly games. For some of our students, it was their first experience of playing soccer and many commented that it was quite enjoyable to play - even if they didn’t know all the rules and had to learn along the way. By displaying fairness, enthusiasm and a positive attitude, the students represented St Joseph’s in the best way possible. Big thanks to the teachers who prepared the students, and a massive thank you to the parent volunteers who managed teams on the day and helped out where needed. We appreciate the support!
