Wellbeing News

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the explicit teaching of intra and interpersonal skills. At Carnegie Primary School we teach our students the knowledge, attitudes and skills associated with social emotional competency.

Our programs teach a range of skills needed to:

  • Understand and manage emotions
  • Set and achieve positive goals
  • Feel and show empathy for others
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships
  • Make responsible decisions

Following the Victorian Curriculum, our lessons are mapped to:

Personal and Social Capabilities:

  • Self-Awareness and self-management: recognition and expression of emotions; and development of resilience
  • Social Awareness and management: Relationships and Diversity; and collaboration

Critical and Creative Thinking Capabilities: questions and possibilities; and Reasoning

Learning Areas:

Health and Physical Education – Personal, Social and Community Health

English – Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing.

At Carnegie Primary School we utilise a range of programs and activities to ensure all classrooms are delivering a well round whole school approach to wellbeing.

We use lessons from Topics 1-8 of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Program*, Zones of Regulation, Bounce Back, Circle Time activities to build peer connections and other activities that are designed to meet our student’s needs.

We also recognise important wellbeing days as a whole school. For example, The National Day of Action Against Bullying and R U OK Day.

Respectful Relationships promotes respect and gender equality and helps students learn how to build healthy relationships. It prepares students to face challenges by developing problem-solving skills and building resilience and confidence.

The Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence recommended Respectful Relationships be introduced to all government schools (Recommendation 189). Evidence presented to the commission showed that family violence is the most pervasive form of violence perpetrated against women in Victoria.
