On Tuesday we celebrated "Grandparents' Day," which coincides with the feast day of the Saints, Joachim and Anne. Joachim and Anne hold a significant place in history as they were the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Their cherished role as the grandparents of Jesus has led them to be the patron saints of grandparents.
Although the New Testament gives a limited amount of information on Joachim and Anne's story, they were believed to be esteemed members of the Jewish community, and their deep desire to become parents led Joachim to embark on a devoted journey of fasting and prayer in the desert. Their unwavering faith was rewarded when their daughter, Mary, came into the world.
In celebrating Joachim and Anne as saints, we find inspiration in their boundless love for each other and for Mary. Their lives serve as an example of how God calls us to embrace love and devotion. Furthermore, they remind us to honour and express gratitude to our own grandparents, who have bestowed their blessings upon us with love and care.
It was great to see many Grandparents and Grandfriends at school on Tuesday and many were there for our Liturgy which was led by Grade 3/4 SL. This liturgy was co-constructed which means the students chose all the readings, and songs and made the PowerPoint presentation to accompany the Liturgy. The Liturgy was complemented by the SMDP Choir and Band led by Jane.
