English Overview (IBDP & TCE)
To help students and parents understand the significant range of English courses on offer in both the IBDP and TCE curriculum the Head of English has recorded a video that provides clear guidance and support for your choices.
IBDP
In the IBDP a student can choose either:
- Language and Literature Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL)
- Literature Higher Level or Standard Level (SL)
or
- Language B: English (EALD)
as a two year pathway in the IBDP.
TCE
A student can choose any one (or more) of five pre-tertiary TCE English courses:
- English Inquiry
- English
- English Literature
- English Studio
- English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
As well as:
- English Foundations, which is usually taken in Year 11, for students needing to consolidate skills before enrolling in one of the three pre-tertiary English subjects (i.e. English, English Literature or English Studio) .
- English Inquiry Level 2, which is recommended for students wishing to consolidate skills needed for the everyday individual, community, and workplace contexts, and may be taken to consolidate skills before enrolling English Inquiry Level 3.
The following pathways are strongly recommended:
A pass (SA or higher) in Level 3 (pre-tertiary) English is a prerequisite for enrolment in every university in Australia. UTAS is the exception which only requires English Level 3 for medicine.
A student’s results in Year 10 English should be taken into account when selecting courses. It is recommended that students consult with their Year 10 English teacher while making their course choices.
