PRAYER/REFLECTION:  We are all very lucky to be members of the wonderful community of St Pius X College. Every day I see young men helping each other, making new friends and showing respect to others around them. Let us take a moment to thank God for this wonderful community that is St Pius X College.

Heavenly Father, you gather us together in our faith journey

Trusting in you, we join one another as a community

A community of faith on a journey

A journey to grow ever deeper in our faith

In our Love

In our Desire to long for you

Along the way, remind us of your Love

Of your sacrifice for us

Of your ever mindful presence

Let us never lose hope along the way

Help us to be strong

Strong in Faith

Strong in Love

Strong in our Desire to be ever mindful of your presence

For it is in your strength and Love and the Graces you bestow upon us, that we can go out and share in your Love and Faith with all those in our community.

It is in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God For ever and ever

AMEN.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

It was a very exciting day at the College on Friday when we celebrated R U OK? Day. The day began with a whole school assembly with Mr John Brogden as our guest speaker. He spoke of his own battles with depression and how we can all support each other. R U OK? Day reminds us to connect with those around us, at home, at work and the communities in which we live. Make it a priority every day to connect and check in with others.

An extended lunchtime was given and the boys were treated to the 'Lights, Camera, Pius' Film Festival. This was a combination of a variety of films created by the Pius community. Most of the Junior School made their way into the gym to be entertained and lots of chatter and smiles ensued at the end of lunch as they talked about their favourite films. For those boys who remained in the playground they were entertained by the musical talents of some of the senior boys.  A great day was had by all.

ICAS English:  On 31st July all boys in the Junior School sat the ICAS English test.  This test assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. The following aspects of texts are assessed and reported:  text comprehension—reading for meaning—in literary and factual texts; the writer’s craft in selecting particular text types, vocabulary and techniques; syntax; and vocabulary. The questions require students to locate, identify, sequence, explain, interpret, analyse and infer information in and about texts.

Again St Pius X College had some outstanding results and the following boys were presented with their certificates of distinction last Friday at our Junior School assembly:

  • Year 5: Robert Oner, James Slade, Jet Stump, Sebastian Blane, Christian Wong, Dylan Turnell, James Furini, Matthew Sissons and Jaydon Akouri.
  • Year 6: Sam Hollinger, Lucas Spinetti, Maxwell Forbes, Eliot Sanders, Victor Mosmann and Blake Markulin

Have Your Say:  The NSW Government wants to ensure our education system is preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.  In order to make future changes they want to hear from you on what you think the key issues are that the NSW Curriculum Review should address. Your feedback will be collated with other responses to identify themes which will inform draft recommendations for the review.  Consultation runs from 3 September to 30 November 2018.

Here are some questions that might be helpful to get you started. We want to keep the conversation as broad as possible so don’t be limited by these suggestions.

  • What should the purpose of schooling be in the 21st century?
  • What knowledge, skills and attributes should every student develop at school?
  • How could the curriculum better support every student’s learning?
  • What else needs to change?

There are three ways that you can have your say….

Reminders:  The collections below are continuing. It will assist us if the boys could have their Walkathon money in by the end of this term to the class teachers. All raffle ticket money and stubs need to be returned to the silver box outside the College Finance Office.

  • Collection and return of the Walkathon money;
  • Bringing in treats for the farmers – these are being collected each morning in Homerooms;
  • Selling and returning the Raffle Tickets.

Australian Reading Hour - Thursday 20th September 2018

Make a date with a book and celebrate the wonder of reading on 20th September 2018.  Rediscover or reintroduce yourself to the benefits of reading. Take the time to learn, grow, escape and relax. I know I will.

It doesn’t matter what time of the day you pick up the book, just dedicate one hour to the cause!

Why an hour? Libraries found readers engaged readily with setting aside a very achievable hour for reading on the nominated day.

Mrs Martin’s Book Trail – Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race by  Margot Lee-Shetterly (Author), Laura Freeman (Illustrator).

There’s no business like show business with these leading ladies topping the bill. If you're a STEM-lover, this book about the NASA women who put a man on the moon is for you! You probably watched the film, Hidden Figures, about four of these brilliant women. Their extraordinary talent is an inspiration to us all.

Happy Reading!
