Netball Clinic with Erin Bell
On the 15 March, around 20 students from various year levels briefly abandoned their textbooks for the first two periods to attend a netball clinic run by the very talented Collingwood Magpies’ player, Erin Bell.
The clinic began with a presentation about Erin Bell’s journey to netball success and how resilience played a huge role in it. Then we got into some warm up games that were a fantastic way for the group to get involved and start moving. After some quick stretches, she then ran us through some drills and always ensured that she explained their relevance to netball and how they improve our playing ability. Although the size of the group hindered us from playing a full court match, Erin was able to modify a game so that we could still apply our new learned skills.
The clinic was thoroughly enjoyed by the group and a lot was achieved throughout the two hours, despite time flying past like our netballs. We would like to show our gratitude to not only Erin Bell for taking the take out of her training to come down to Nossal High School, but also Renee Tuck (Student Counsellor) for organising theamazing opportunity.
FareShare 2018
FareShare, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a volunteer-based hub of food rescue and distribution. Last year alone, FareShare saved 821 tonnes of food that would have otherwise been thrown away, due to its irregular shape or size. This food is then cooked into nutritious and delicious meals and distributed to those in need.
FareShare emphasises the necessity of countries to decrease their food insecurity and aim to raise awareness of this current global issue we all face. Malnourishment and mass hunger is still rife around the globe, even though collectively, we create enough food products to feed and sustain the entire planet’s population.
Nossal’s group of volunteers cracked altogether, over an amazing 5,000 eggs, which were to go in quiches and savoury tarts. Our cracking skills will ensure that over 1,000 different people will receive a nutrition filled, warm meal, which is an awesome effort! There are more opportunities to join the team of Nossal volunteers throughout the year, so don’t hesitate to participate!

Term 1 Working Bee
Thank you to the more than 30 students, parents and staff who attended the Working Bee at the school last Saturday. Despite the overcast skies, the dedicated team of people made a big impact on our environment. The outdoor seating in both the Library and main courtyards was painted; gardens were tidied and weeded; other gardens and areas of the school received a fresh covering of mulch; Mr Page made some important repairs to our boundary fence opposite the Insight School; and the area along the boundary with the factories was also tidied, with both long grass being cut and young trees attended to. The efficiency and effectiveness of the group was clearly demonstrated in that all of this work was achieved before 10:30am when we stopped for morning tea, needing both a break and also shelter from the rain that then settled in and saw us finish our day early.
We greatly appreciate the results achieved by our volunteers which has helped establish the school grounds ready for the South East Feast.

Year 9
After a long time of inactivity, the chess team is back and better than ever! On the 16 of March, a group of Nossal students including two new year nines went to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to face of in the Arnold Inter-school Chess Tournament, which was held on the first day of the Arnold Sports Festival (named after Arnold Schwarzenegger). Although the tournament was small and held in a large hall with music and commentary blasting through, the competition was still hot between the contestants and everybody fought until the end.
The final scores after six hotly contested rounds were: Josiah Schuller and Akshayan Manivannan with a flawless score of six wins, John Wang with five wins and one draw, Nicholas Illic with five wins and one loss, and Rahul Preman and Ashali Haputhanthri with both three wins and three losses. At the end, Nossal came out first with a very high score of 22 ½ out of 24 possible points and thus were granted access to the state finals held later on in the year.
Overall, everybody was satisfied with the results of the tournament and is excited for the next event for the team.

GRIP Leadership Conference
The GRIP Conference was an unforgettable experience for all. With more than just a few hundred students from school all across Victoria, our Nossal Leadership Team gained an insightful experience of how to better our leadership skills and improve our leading and working together as a team to lead our school.
As a representative of the SRC Leadership Team, I had the privilege of travelling to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, and built a solid foundation of relationships with other schools and worthwhile learning of how to gain participation in our events, leading by example to greater establish an even stronger sense school of pride within ourselves. Our members actively participated in each activity and synthesised together all techniques to strengthen communications both within the leaders and the school.
