ISA Representative Cricket

The Combined ISA representatives from the College continued their fixtures in the past week with games against GPS and Canberra Schools. In the first match Joe Colgan made 39, Stuart Dingley 26 and Liam Chang took one wicket in a three-wicket loss. On Sunday, the game at the picturesque Bradman Oval in Bowral resulted in a resounding victory for ISA. Tyson McCallum joined the team and impressed with his work behind the stumps taking two catches and allowing no byes. Joe Colgan made a quickfire 19 off 9 balls before taking 4 for 16 and Stuart Dingley scored 30. All the St Pius players represented the College and the ISA very well and were a credit to themselves.

Protective Equipment.  For safety and hygiene ALL players are to have their own personal groin protector and their own personal helmet. Wearing of helmets and groin protectors are compulsory for all players batting in nets or a game or wicket-keeping up at the stumps. Please College Cricket Helmet and Groin Protector Polices (attached).

Uniform.  Players and parents are reminded that correct SPX Cricket playing uniform is the only attire to worn on the field during play. SPX cricket playing shirts, caps and wide brimmed hats are available from the College Uniform Shop.

Please see the attached documents for more information:

  • Welcome to Cricket 2019-20

NSTA Tennis

It was a perfect day for tennis and there were some great matches that were played at both the 8 am and the 10 am sessions. Antony Autore SPX 18 played a close match against Redlands just pipping them at the post for a 6-5 win. Aidan Parsons and Callum Skinner, SPX 22, were a strong doubles team but unfortunately it wasn’t their day and they lost their match 5-6. Great work by Will Scaiff and Martin Chan (SPX 24) who won all both singles and doubles 6-1.  Well done boys!

There were some great rallies seen on court 1 in the 10 am session against Michael Whitehead and James Higgins. Their singles match came down to tiebreakers with James taking out the win. SPX 16 vs SPX 15 was another amazing match to watch with some tricky shots and strong serves.

A reminder that all players are expected to be at their matches at least 15 minutes before the start of play.

Please note that the weekly draw can be accessed via this link: NSTA DRAW.

ISA Tennis

Applications for the winter ISA Tennis season, running in Terms 2 and 3, are now open! Forms and information are available from the veranda outside the Student Office. This really is great extra-curricular activity option. Our teams share a great sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship and the training sessions are run by professional tennis coaches, with activities tailored to each player’s skill levels. Grading sessions will be held in Weeks 9, 10 and 11 of this term, with matches beginning on the first Saturday of Term 2. For further information please contact – aobrien@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au

Senior Swimming Squad

Last Saturday evening the Senior Swimming squad competed in the Annual Christian Brothers Carnival at North Sydney. It was a valiant effort from all with the Juniors coming 2nd, Intermediates coming 5th and the Seniors coming 3rd with an overall placing of 4th. Well done to all the boys.

On Wednesday 11 March the school is competing at the ISA Swimming Carnival held at Homebush Aquatic Centre (SOPAC). The bus leaves the College at 9.00 am and we will arrive back at the College approximately 6.00 pm that evening. I will provide lunch for the team throughout the day but it would be desirable for the boys to bring their own snacks. Parents are welcome to pick up their son from Homebush directly otherwise they will need to be picked up from the College when we arrive back.

The team list of competitors and which events they are swimming in has been placed on the Student Noticeboard outside the Main Office. Please check whether you are competing and be aware of what is happening on the day. Details will be given by Mr Stearn at the Sports Assembly this Friday.  I will provide further details at the meeting straight after the Assembly.  Therefore all members of the swimming squad must attend the meeting.

Training concludes next Tuesday March 10.

Rugby Training

While the Opens and Under 16s have been training now for most of the term, all other age groups will commence training at Oxford Falls on 24 Thursday March. Buses will depart Archer Street outside OLD Church at 3:30 pm and will return to Chatswood by 5:30 pm. Students can be picked up from Oxford Falls at 5.00 pm.

Training during Term 1 will include basic skills, defence and set piece practice as well as a variety of decision-making games, all held during the sessions so players can be graded into suitable teams. Unlike other sports at the College, teams can change from week to week due to player performance, injuries or unavailability. The expectation is that players make themselves available for selection each week and play in the team their age group coach selects them in.

All players are reminded that protective gear, including mouth guards, must be worn at all times, including training sessions. Not having a mouthguard will impact your son’s ability to participate fully in the session.

Dates for the calendar from Term 1:

  • 24/3/20 – Training commences for all age groups at Oxford Falls.
  • 27/3/20-28/3/20 – Opens Pre-season Camp at Workul Koo
  • 4/4/20 – Sydney Grammar 10s – two teams per age group.
  • 14/4/20-15/4/20 – Holiday Rugby Clinic (Oxford Falls – included in registration)
  • 17/4/20-24/4/20 – Under 15s New Zealand Rugby Tour
