Dear St James,

On behalf of Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to access the generosity of your community at St James Primary!

Amazing effort all across your students, staff members and community.

An extra special thanks to all the students on duty for this event. Well done team!

Mr Buckley, the BBQ would be an absolute fail with out you, thank you for stepping in!

Cant wait to do it again next year.

Yours in Sport,

Year 5

In recent weeks the Year 5s have been looking at the parable of the Good Samaritan in terms of it being a story of human dignity. Students were asked to write a poem, a prayer or simply write down their thoughts about what the story might look like or sound like in 2018. Students wrote prayers or poems of inspiration, of sorrow, of helplessness. Some wrote from the perspective of lonely or homeless people. Below is a sample of their responses.

“ Be the person and not the shadow”

Hold out you hand, help someone up

Don’t let them just sit there, help others grow up.

Be their friend when they most need it,

To be the right person you have to believe it.

Listen to what they have to say ,

Over and over and over again ,

                                            Do what you have to,

                                          Just be there them,

                                        Your friends are like gold,

                                                So take care of

                                                         Them.

God forgive us our sins this day and the ability to look past people who may sin against us, may you give us the power to be the good samaritan told in the story and treat others the way we expect to be treated.  Amen

Why Can’t I...

Why can't I be kind and caring,

grateful and loving?

Why can’t I break free?

I am trapped in a bubble, tied to the ground.

People connect with each other everyday,

Smiling to everyone as they pass by

They greet each other with a smile.

They have the power to forgive.

They have the power to show mercy.

Even if they’ve been hurt or betrayed.

They forgive. They show mercy.

How do they do it,

kind and caring, grateful and loving?

It's a mess in my head, drowning in water,

Being shot hard and buried in the dirt.

I am sinking down a drain.

Lord help me…

Help me forgive myself.

Help me be merciful to others.

Lord, please help me...

Homeless

Sorry that you’re sitting there, alone. I will give you some money to spare.

Here's some food and some drinks that are really good for you.

I will give you a hundred dollars so then you can get a unit for yourself  and then you can improve your wealth and your health.

Looking Up From The Gutter

Everyday I sit here, no one will ever care,

Everyday I watch the streets, sitting in despair.

I cry every night, I pray for happiness everyday,

I sit and watch the people going their various ways.

People walk right past me, it’s like I’m not there,

Sometimes people laugh at me, sometimes people stare.

I wish people cared for me, I really need some food,

I think I won’t live for much longer, but that’s what people choose.

Samaritan Poem

Nobody gives a care,  they never want to share.

I know someday it will be done and then I will be free to run.

My family will be safe and then we’ll find a way to reach another day.

Now we need to fly away from the street.

Excursion

Last Friday, the Year 1 and 2 classes went on an excursion to ACMI (The Australian Centre for the Moving Image) at Federation Square. This was to support the students’ investigations of stories from around the world, within their current Connected Learning topic ‘Hello World’. The students, teachers and parents watched a Japanese animation called Arrietty, based on Mary Norton’s English book ‘The Borrowers’. Afterwards, the students explored many different artworks throughout the National Gallery, each with their own interesting story. Everyone had a fun day in the city!

Thanks again to all the wonderful parents who came along!

Year 3

Earlier this term, a very excited group of Grade 3’s, Mr Flanagan and Mrs Herbert had the experience of a lifetime at the Melbourne Zoo’s, ‘Zoo Snooze’. From the moment they arrived to the moment they left, not a minute was wasted exploring this amazing place.

From sleeping and eating in the old elephant enclosure, working in teams to complete the ‘Zoo Survivor’ tasks, exploring the Zoo on a night and morning walk and Mrs Herbert making sure that every inch of the zoo was walked, everyone left with many wonderful memories!

Mr Flanagan and Mrs Herbert were extremely proud of all the Grade 3 students with the way in which they represented St James.

Foundation and Remembrance Day!

Please come over to the Tilley playground to see the Foundation Remembrance Day display.

This Sunday 11th November we remember all the people who have lost their lives in war and all the people that serve to keep our country safe.

This year marks one hundred years since the end of World War One in 1918. Children in Foundation have been learning how important it is to live in peace, be peacemakers not peace breakers.

We thank and ask God to bless all the people who have died in war. Lest We Forget.
