Unit 3 Legal Studies Excursion

Broadmeadows Magistrate Court

A day in the Broadmeadows court precinct.

Earlier in May,  two Year 12 Legal Studies classes had the opportunity to visit Broadmeadows Legal Aid and speak with lawyers and administrative staff about the types of claims they assist people with, and how they manage to support all the people who qualify for assistance.  They then met lawyers from Northern Community Legal Centre who outlined the support that they offer members of the community who cannot afford their own representation.

Students gained a new perspective on the breadth of legal difficulties, and the obstacles that many people face in being treated fairly before the law.   With this background, students then observed proceedings in several courtrooms at Broadmeadows Magistrates' Court.

Their observations will help them to analyse rights of victims and accused, observe the work of key personnel and understand various steps in determining criminal cases.  Sitting in the Koori Court also enabled students to evaluate how changes to mainstream courts can improve fairness, equality and access to the justice system for Indigenous Australians.
