On Friday 10th of August the intermediate and senior boys football (soccer) competed in the SMR regionals soccer competition. The team started the day off at Mornington Secondary College, where the boys got kitted up. Then they made their way up to Kingston Heath Soccer Complex, where the competition was held. You should also know that Mornington did very well to get to this position as they got through the first round.
The intermediate boys had a positive warm up, had a talk about their positioning and playing as a team and got straight into a game against EMC. It was a scramble in the first half because no team could find space and following that they unfortunately went 1-0 down in the first half and had to improve if they wanted to salvage something from the game, Jude Jones talked about playing a simple passing game in the second half to hopefully score some goals. Despite a positive team talk they were annoyed by a loss in the first game. But not all hope was lost, the senior boys still had to play their first game. The first half looked a promising one for the boys and their calm passing and positioning was second to none, but unexpectedly the scores were tied at 0-0 in the first half against Minaret. But sure enough Mornington came through with a 2-0 win as Josh Smith and Noah Green jumped onto the score sheet.
So the seniors had a playoff game to get into the SMR finals whereas intermediates played for pride. Seniors against a tough opposition in Frankston who beat Minaret comfortably and Lyndale to play the Intermediates.
Lyndale was a big team and were hard to deal with at times and were harder of the two games, you could tell they weren’t as enthusiastic for this game as they knew the stakes and unfortunately were beaten a second time, but the seniors still had a chance up against Frankston, they started the game with a high tempo and discovered the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team, but as it went on they weren’t able to pounce on Frankston’s flaws and found themselves 2-0 down against a very good Frankston team.
Overall the day was enjoyed by everyone and was a good experience for those that want to get better at soccer. The coaches, Mr Jones and Mr Williams did a good job to coach the teams as they got past the first round, and challenged the opponents in the SMR round.
