Numeracy

In mathematics, our children have enjoyed applying their number skills to a range of different aspects of mathematics. Focusing on length, width and height was interesting and provided opportunities for the children to develop understandings of using formal and informal units of measurement. Some children completed a task where they predicted and then measured the vegetable garden to see how much fencing would be required.
In our unit on fractions children applied their understanding of halves and quarters, by making pizzas and dividing them up. We also iced biscuits and used smarties to show fractional amounts.
Looking at time allowed a number of mathematical concepts to be applied. Human clocks, clocks made from gum nuts and analogue clocks were used to help develop understands of “o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past". Reading the time on an analogue clock is not always easy but is a very important life skill.
The term is closing with activities centred around Location. We have practised applying the language of location to a variety of tasks such as Treasure Hunts.
