Year 9

Mental Health and COVID Fatigue

Many of us continue to be on alert and in various stages of lockdown as restrictions continue to be mandated. We, as a society, persevere to do the best we can to navigate this post-COVID era. We continue to remain in a state of suspended animation, wondering when 'normal' will return.

Being a young person today is difficult, but so too is being the parent of one. Young people are feeling like they don’t have much control over their lives. Their developmental processes have been interfered with and their trajectory has been interrupted. Young people can’t choose what happens to them, but they can choose how to respond. Encouraging them to use programs such as 'Mood Gym', will help them change their thinking.

Subject Selections

Experiences and achievements in Years 9 and 10 will assist students in making sound decisions about what they will study in the vital VCE years and beyond. While there continues to be a set of core studies, there is also the opportunity to select from a range of elective units that run for a semester. These elective units provide an introduction, or a continuation from Year 9 studies, to areas of study that lead to VCE Units. They allow students to explore strengths, interests and preferences before committing to a subject in VCE.

Our focus for the beginning of Term 3 for students in Year 9 is subject selection and pathways planning for 2022. This process provides a valuable opportunity for discussions with your daughter regarding her goals for the future and encourages reflection upon her interests, learning dispositions and academic strengths.

Recent events have certainly reaffirmed the need for young people to develop skills in communicating, collaborating and critical thinking, that are easily transferable into ever-changing environments. Thus, encouraging your daughters to be open to all possibilities, to explore their passions and to consider multiple types of scenarios for their futures, is one way you can work in partnership with the College through this process.

Whilst this process will go ahead, the College has had to adapt to accommodate the current restrictions regarding large gatherings and parents on site. We have developed a series of virtual and online activities to engage parents in lieu of the Information Evenings, VCE/VCAL/VET Subject Expo and pathway interviews.
