INQUIRY
Our Term Three Inquiry focus is The Australian Colonies. Students will investigate Australian history related to colonial Australia. They'll explore the significance of Australia’s British heritage, identify and explore the contributions of different individuals and groups to the development of the Australian colonies. Students will identify the cause and effect of relationships to our Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander communities and the impact on their lives since colonisation. They'll describe the different experiences of people in the past and sequence events and people in chronological order, using timelines.
The Key Questions that we will be covering are:
1 - Who were the people who came to Australia? Why did they come?
2 - What contribution have significant individuals and groups made to the development of Australian society?
3 - What impact has this had on Indigenous Australians?
ENGLISH
Writing:
During Term Three, our Year Five/Six students will be completing units of writing over a two week period. The fortnightly topics are:
Weeks 1-2 - Debate / Persuasive
Weeks 3-4 - Poetry
Weeks 5-6 - Debating
Week 7- Camp (no writing focus)
Weeks 8 - 9 - Recount
Week 10 - Free choice
Students were set Persuasive and Poetry writing pieces during Remote Learning. We will be covering both of these topics again throughout the term.
Below are some examples of student poems completed at school.
Reading:
'Fly the Rebel Flag - The Battle of Eureka' written by Robyn Annear, is our class novel this term. It links closely to our school camp to Sovereign Hill. Through the different reading processes of synthesising, critiquiing, inferencing, analysing, visualising and making connections the students will gather information linked to The Eureka Stockdale.
Speaking and Listening:
Students will be participating in a classroom debate focusing on a current topic. Debates are an organised form of argument that involves looking at issues and justifying points of view. Students will be in teams and will either give their opinion / point of view either for or against the topic. They will be assigned jobs and a formal debate will occur within the classroom.
MATHEMATICS
The Mathematical topics being covered during the term are: Number characteristics (prime, composite, square, triangle, powers and factors), Number patterns, BODMAS, Transformation & Tesselation, Angles, Equivalent values (percentage, fractions, decimal), Number games, Elapsed time, Weight / Mass, Mental and Written mathematical strategies. Students will investigate these concepts, complete a range of levelled activities and apply their knowledge to a range of learning and portfolio tasks.
HOME LEARNING - TERM THREE
Attached below is the Home Learning tasks for term three. There are two different sets with the only difference being the Maths. These are also uploaded on the Google Classroom platform.
THANK YOU
Mrs Woollard, Mr McFarlane and Miss Humphries would like to thank all families for their support during the current Remote Learning. We understand that every student faces different feelings and emotions when placed in these situations. The resilience that is shown by all involved is commendable.
Let's keep building strong relationships and focusing on our school values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE.
