Term Three in Year Two!

Inquiry

The topic for our Inquiry unit for this term is Minibeasts. Students will study and show their understanding and answer questions such as what is a minibeast? How do minibeasts affect and benefit humans and the environment? How do the activities of humans affect the lives and wellbeing of minibeasts?

Students will learn how living things have basic needs, including food and water. They will explore the structure and external features of living things they find at home and in the schoolyard and investigate how these things live in different places where their needs are met. Students will also study how living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves.

Literacy

This term students in Year Two will continue to engage and participate in InitiaLit 2 lessons and activities. In spelling we will be introducing new tricky words and spelling concepts. In comprehension lessons students will be reading different text types and be introduced to new reading strategies including inferring, finding the main idea and summarising. In grammar students will continue to recognise and use different parts of speech.

In Writing students began the term with a holiday highlights recount where they chose three highlights from their school holidays. Throughout this term students will continue to develop a deep understanding of narrative texts. They will complete a range of activities to identify the features of narrative texts then be required to show their understanding of these features in their own written story. Later in the term students will also begin to look at the features of a persuasive text and get a chance to write their own persuasive piece of writing.

Mathematics

During this Term in the Number and Algebra strand we will be focusing on addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions of a whole shape and fractions of a group and money. In Statistics and Probability, the likelihood of events occurring. In the strand of Measurement we will be studying reading and recording time on analogue and digital clocks, the effects of a flip, slide or turn on a shape and location including giving directions.

When we return to onsite schooling the students will complete their unit on Location including giving directions and Coding using the Beebots. They loved this unit and will be so excited to return to complete it. Students will be completing a range of different lessons and hands-on activities to continue to build upon their mathematical skills.

Wellbeing

This term in wellbeing we will be focusing on developing social skills of friendship and positive relationships. We will continue to implement lessons related to the Berry Street Model.

We will also be spending time this term as a whole year level practicing our production dances ready for Term Four.

Thank you to everyone for all your amazing support during another period of Remote Learning. We are very grateful for the kindness and support that is shown by our parents and students during these times.

Take Home Readers

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose two readers from school to take home and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. We urge families to read daily to help support the learning that is happening within the classroom.

Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them on Friday the same week.
