Term Three in Year One!

INQUIRY

The topic for our Inquiry unit for this term is Minibeasts. Students will study and show their understanding and answer questions such as what is a minibeast? How do minibeasts affect and benefit humans and the environment? How do the activities of humans affect the lives and wellbeing of minibeasts?

Students will learn how living things have basic needs, including food and water. They will explore the structure and external features of living things they find at home and in the schoolyard and investigate how these things live in different places where their needs are met. Students will also study how living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves.

LITERACY

In Writing students will continue to develop a deep understanding of narrative texts. They will complete a range of activities to identify the features of narrative texts then be required to show their understanding of these features in their own written story. Later in the term students will also begin to look at the features of a persuasive text and get a chance to write their own persuasive piece of writing.

NUMERACY

Over the last three weeks the Year One students have been focusing on money, chance, subtraction and addition.

In our first week back students explored and practised a number of subtraction and addition strategies including counting on and counting back to work out an answer, as well as the jump strategy. Students use 'family groups' to help them work out addition and subtraction equations. For example, 2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-3=2 and 3-2=3.

You can help your child at home to develop their understanding and automatic recall of number facts by playing card, dice and domino games at home. They could use dominoes to create equations which they then calculate. Your child could play with parents or siblings a simple card game where two cards are flipped over for all participants to see, and the person who can say the answer correctly first gets those cards. This can all be played with a regular dice (or  8 sided, 10 sided or 12 sided dice if you have them.)

During our first week of remote learning students focused on developing their understanding of Australia money. Students looked at the different features of each coin, and did coin rubbings of each coin. Students also ordered the coins and notes into order from least valuable to most valuable.

To help boost your child's understanding of money, talk to them about the different ways we pay for things, for example credit and debit cards as well as physical coins and notes. If appropriate for your family, give your child pocket money so they can learn about money management and budgeting.  Discuss different ways we can make $1, $2, $10 etc.

WELLBEING

This term in wellbeing we will be focusing on developing social skills of friendship and positive relationships. We will continue to implement lessons related to the Berry Street Model. We will also be spending time this term as a whole year level practising our production dances ready for Term Four.

Thank you to everyone for all your amazing support during another period of Remote Learning. We are very grateful for the kindness and support that is shown by our parents and students during these times.
