POLICE VISIT - YEAR 10 INCURSION

Our experience with Guest speaker Sergeant Joe Ianzano

We had the amazing opportunity to listen to Sergeant Joe talk about young people and the law, as part of our Civics and Citizenship studies.

Joe provided us with his insight from the perspective of a police officer as he covered the rights of youth at our age, discussed various crimes and their consequences, and gave very good advice to students.

We discussed the act of intention or ‘mens rea’, warrants, gatherings in public places and many other examples of Youth behaviour and offending leading to arrest and custody.

This was incredibly helpful for the CAT that all of the year 10 humanities classes are working on for young people and the law.

Joe gave us insight to the questions that were asked which also intrigued some students with their career paths in the future as he gave an insight on the process to becoming a police officer. This included the assessment to meet the criteria to be accepted, placed on the merit point to reach the police academy and extend training to become an officer.

He also mentioned the 250 different roles within the police force such as being a detective or flying the helicopter.

We were encouraged by our teachers to express student voice and before the incursion, we planned and drove the questions we wanted to find out about in our classes for the CAT and selected representatives to ask these questions.

It was a really informative and insightful experience. Thank you Sergeant Joe!
