MAKING A DIFFERENCE

MAKING MUSIC AND DONATING MONEY TO A GOOD CAUSE

Joe | Year 11 IBDP

During the lockdown, I had a moment of realization that a lot of the things I was occupying myself with were a waste of my time and attention. I felt that I was sitting in my room and rotting, which I am sure many could relate to. An upside of it all though was that I was able to explore a lot more of my favorite music over the Internet, and in a sudden burst of inspiration, I decided that I would give producing a go.

I listened to music as a way to be taken somewhere else, kind of like how people read fiction books to immerse themselves in another universe, and that was the goal for me.

I wanted to develop my musical and aesthetic skills so that I could make something that would take the listener somewhere. I found it fascinating that our brains infer the environment around us and produce feelings when we hear certain sounds and so I feel music is a fantastic medium for the projection of feelings and for the construction of a space, a lot can be felt in one song and a good song can take you somewhere completely different.

As part of my CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) for the IB Diploma, I have chosen to make my music an ongoing project but have also decided to take it a step further and use any money made to donate to the Australian Children’s Music Foundation. The ACMF is a charity dedicated to providing weekly music education classes and instruments to disadvantaged children and youth at risk throughout Australia. I feel like this is the perfect charity to give any money made by my little project to because music is a gift, and it is best shared and enjoyed by everybody.
