Student Happenings

Morning Tea in the Sunshine

Year 10 students of  Moore and Chisholm Houses hosted a pastoral morning tea, where they sat down with invited staff of the school to chat over the 'big issues'. Organised entirely by the students, they chose the menu for the morning and questions to ask each other and the staff, as well as where to host the event. A pleasant morning was had by all who attended, where conversation and food, as well as each other's company, could be shared in an informal and casual way. Youth Ministry is all about knowing and respecting each other, as well as demonstrating leadership within the church and looking out for others. Well done Moore and Chisholm Houses, as well as the staff who attended, who made this inaugural student led morning tea a successful morning in the sunshine!

Hitting the Airwaves

Year 9 Media students hit the airwaves on 25th May, as Maria and Olivia from Deniliquin's 'End FM' came into school to run a masterclass on radio technique, use of equipment and voice projection. Students were enthusiastically engaged as they used the equipment and listened intently, honing their radio craft for their current assessment tasks of creating a short radio broadcast segment. Great things continue to happen @ St Joe's Media!

Law Week 2021

Law Week was 17th-23rd May was in Victoria and was rcognized at St. Joseph's College with events to interested staff and students.

All week we promoted links on SIMON to Victorian Law Foundation online webinars that covered a broad range of legal issues such as residential tenancy and consent, and even offered opportunities to Zoom in with the Judges!

On Wednesday 19th May we hosted a "coffee with a cop" session in our Oak Centre, with Leading Senior Constable Brooks talking to our students about how to become a police officer, what life in the Academy is like and what operational policing is like. Of particular interest was her commentary on how technology is improving police tactics and due to all the government restrictions and border closures. She fielded lots questions on how the police had to approach their work during the lockdown last year due to the restrictions. She commented on how thoughtful insights and questions were from the students, and their polite and respectful behaviour.

On Friday 21st May we hosted two lawyers from Cosgriff Lawyers, Darcy Bibby and Lachie Cosgriff, who, like LSC Brooks, spoke of their journey into law and what life is like as a lawyer, interesting matters they are currently working on, and what university as law students was like. Of particular interest was their discussion of their favourite aspects of the law (family law and employment law) and how surprised they both were by the direction that was taking their careers.

We thank both LSC Brooks and Lachie and Darcy for taking the time out of their busy schedules to come and talk to our students at St. Joseph's and "bringing to life" Law Week for us. We hope to make "Law Week 2022" even bigger and better!
