Speak for Faith 2021

Founded in 2016 in partnership with the Catenians and Catholic Education Western Australia, Speak for Faith is a Catholic Schools Public Speaking Competition. The aim of Speak for Faith is to provide opportunity and incentive for students of Senior Secondary Religious Education to speak positively on the topic of Catholic faith in relation to their studies of the Religion and Life syllabus content.

This year, John XXIII College is proud to present our two selected candidates from the Year 12 ATAR Religion and Life cohort: Oscar Hegge and Caitlin Green.  Both Oscar and Caitlin are excellent public speakers in their own right and have a track record of proven success and achievement on the public stage.

Our students will compete against the top public speakers from a range of Catholic Schools in Western Australia. Each student is asked to prepare a five-minute speech on the connection between religion and life from a Catholic perspective. Immediately afterwards, the contestants will be given an unseen topic and will be asked to prepare and speak on this topic for two minutes.

The heats for the competition will be held on 12 June 12, 2021. We wish both Oscar and Caitlin great success in their endeavours!

Dungeon’s & Dragon’s Club

The Dungeons and Dragons Club has been roaring along since our return this term. The Year 7 beginners campaign runs on Monday afternoons, where the students learn to work in a collaborative fashion to solve the problems they encounter. These eight Year 7 students are playing the Lost Mines of Phandelver and have been given their hand made dice bags to mark their initiation into the world of D&D. Wesley Soares is also running an advanced campaign on Monday afternoons and Fred Keane is running a medium level campaign on Wednesday afternoons.

In Term 2 new campaigns will start. Any student who wishes to DM a campaign should see Mr Connellan as soon as possible. A meeting will take place at the start of Term 2 to assign players to the various campaigns. If anyone wishes to play in any of the new campaigns then they will need to attend that initial meeting.

Our First XVIII AFL team played their third round against Servite College this week. It was an incredible game, however Servite managed to steal the lead in the last few minutes of the game. Congratulations and thank you must go to our coach Mr Darren Kowal and all the team.

Cross-Country

Our Cross-Country team is looking incredibly strong in the lead up to our School Sport WA Cross-Country Carnival on Friday 21 May and the ACC Cross-Country Carnival on Thursday 27 May. Training is still underway and runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00-8:00am.

Our Tuesday sessions, starting next week on the 18 May, will take place off site at Alderbury Reserve. A bus will depart the College bus shelter at 6:50am to transport students to Alderbury Reserver and a bus will take ALL students back to school at the end of the session. If students wish to make their way directly to Alderbury Reserve, our team meeting point is the Cambridge Scout and Guide Hall as pointed out on the map below at 7:00am.  All SSWA and ACC Squad members are encouraged to attend the remainder of our cross country training sessions.

Congratulations to the below students for making our cross country teams.
