Annual Educating for Justice Student Seminar

In preparation for Reconciliation Week in 2021, Marian College, West Sunshine had the privilege of hosting the annual educating for justice student seminar. The day plays a vital role in educating students from across the network of Kildare Ministries schools regarding the history and contemporary experiences of our First Nations people.

We had the pleasure of listening to the stories of Sherry Belcombe, from Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, during the first session of the day. Her overall message was one in keeping with the goals of reconciliation - that being truth telling, respect and activism. The students were inspired by her courage, as she not only guided us to reflect upon the painful history of Indigenous people, but also the pride and place of her people on this land throughout the centuries. As a dedicated activist and spokesperson for Indigenous rights and recognition, she enlivened our hearts and encouraged us to look upon Indigenous people, and their history, with a sense of wonder and openness.

Her presentation was appreciated by many of the staff and students - culminating in every school wanting to have a photo with her to commemorate the day. Her greatest message of encouragement to our young people was her faith and belief in the next generation in which she sees a renewed opportunity for change.

From here, our students completed a series of workshops aimed to consolidate her message and aid in the preparation for educational activities in our respective school communities. The workshops addressed issues both past and present, and provided opportunities for students to become aware of contemporary issues facing First Nations people, as well as the effects of the past upon their current lived realities.

Overall, it was a wonderful day; the staff and students at Marian College worked together beautifully to ensure that all of our visitors felt welcomed and appreciated.
