Performing Arts News

Congratulations to the year 12 Drama class 2021

This year the stimulus for the group performance task was Hart Island – the story of a little island.

Performance Focus:

“Hart Island is located in The Bronx, New York City. It has a phenomenal history, yet remains, even to New Yorkers, quite unknown. Access to Hart Island is tightly controlled, but in recent years, changes have taken place to right the wrongs of Hart Island’s past, leaving hope for the future. Using eclectic performance styles, your task is to tell the story of this little Island and consider the lessons to be learnt”.  (Outcome 1)

Two performance pieces were created;

“H(e)artless”

Nyanah Clarke, Charlotte Dirckze, Sue Duong, Ashleigh Illingworth,

Rose Kavanagh, Iryna Loboda & Abigail Williams

In a checked past Hart Island was utilised, amongst other things as a boy’s jail. It is now a mass graveyard for claimed and unclaimed bodies. In an exploration of Hart Island as a land of buried emotions we have interpreted the Island symbolically as a depository for emotional disconnection. This performance follows a series of public figures who, in order to cope in the vision of the public eye and celebrity, travel on the ‘plane of thought’ to Hart Island, stripping away their emotions and quite literally, taking their hearts.

“Afterlife Anonymous”

Marnie Florence-McNeil, Sarayah Hoolihan, Jemima Kavanagh,

Jean Palamara, Campbell Perkins, Claire Riverland & Jayda Young

This performance takes you on a journey to an “Underwater Museum”. Here you will meet the lost souls of Hart Island looking for their identity and memories after death. Whilst traversing the “Underwater Museum” you will investigate the history of Hart Island’s people and learn of the Islands past purposes. Get involved and become part of the Hart Island Project, working to restore identities.
