HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION - CURRICULUM OPTIONS

SPECIALISED PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This course provides students with opportunities to understand and improve performance through the integration of theoretical concepts and practical activities. Students will develop their knowledge of functional anatomy, physiology, and biomechanical concepts relating to sporting performance. Through engagement as performers, leaders, coaches, analysts and planners of physical activity, students will develop their practical physical ability in a variety of areas and their knowledge of all aspects of sport.
This course links with various sporting organisations including Western Australian Institute of Sport as students experience a wide variety of sporting opportunities.
The course appeals to students, with varying backgrounds, physical activity knowledge and dispositions. They analyse the performance of themselves and others, apply theoretical principles and plan programs to enhance performance. This subject provides a good foundation for the requirements of Physical Education Studies at an ATAR level and the Certificate II in sports coaching.
A consumables charge of approximately $20.00 will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
SPECIALIST SOCCER
The Specialised Physical Education Soccer course provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills, fitness, knowledge and understanding in soccer. The units are designed to develop fitness levels, practical skills and knowledge of strategies and tactics specific to the game of soccer. Alongside the practical elements of the game students will learn about nutritional requirements, training methods, fitness components, mental skills and recovery methods. Students will also be exposed to umpiring and coaching development across the course. A major priority of the unit is to encourage the participation of students in soccer; both at the College and local community level in a playing, coaching and officiating role. Players of all levels are encouraged to join the course. There will be opportunities for students to play competitively for the College in Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) and School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions as required and will be encouraged to play at club level.
Specialist courses will have links to community organisations and will be delivered by experts in the field and will work towards coaching and umpiring accreditations.

SPECIALIST NETBALL
The Specialised Physical Education Netball course provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills, fitness, knowledge and understanding in Netball. The units are designed to develop fitness levels, practical skills and knowledge of strategies and tactics in netball. Additionally, students will learn about nutritional requirements, training methods, fitness components and recovery methods. SPECIALIST BASKETBALL
The Specialised Physical Education Basketball course provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills, fitness, knowledge and understanding in basketball. The units are designed to develop fitness levels, practical skills and knowledge of strategies and tactics in basketball. Additionally, students will learn about nutritional requirements, training methods, fitness components and recovery methods. Students will also be exposed to umpiring and coaching development across the course. WIND, WATER, WAVES
This course will develop skills, knowledge and safe attitudes for numerous aquatic environments. Throughout this is a practical based unit, students will take part in some theory exploring the importance of wind, waves and water in our world.
STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING: Students will learn skills including how to leave and return to the beach safely, self-rescue techniques and numerous stroke and turning techniques on flat water. These sessions will take place off campus at Shelley Foreshore on the Swan River.
SAILING: Will see students learn about the anatomy of a sailing boat including how to correctly rig a boat. They will develop the ability to read the wind and weather conditions and to apply the correct techniques to enhance performance. Students will learn to leave and return to the beach safely, self-rescue if capsizing, jibe and tact. Students will be instructed by external sailing professional offsite at South Perth Foreshore.
DIVING: Will see students travel to HBF Stadium to learn the sport of Diving. Students will learn the skills of springboard and platform diving, under the watchful and very experienced WA diving instructors.
SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING: Students will be given the opportunity to try one of Australia’s fastest growing sports. Instructors from Synchronised Swimming WA will teach the students the physical and artistic skills required in synchronised swimming.
RECREATIONAL SKIPPERS TICKET (RST): Students will have the opportunity to acquire their skippers’ ticket. The unit will cover the theoretical component of the course, preparing students to sit the written examination part of this qualification. Students must be able to competently swim 300 metres. If students wish to take up this opportunity, this will be arranged by the teacher at an additional cost.

MUIR - OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Jon Muir is the recipient of the Australian Geographic Society Lifetime of Adventure Award that recognises those who have lived a life of exploration and adventure, but who have also given back and inspired others.
This course is designed to provide outdoor skills, knowledge and attitudes for safe outdoor participation. The students will take part in:
SNORKELLING:
Students will learn how to correctly snorkel, the various techniques involved, equipment use and maintenance, enabling students to build confidence to snorkel and swim safely. Multiple snorkelling lessons will take the students off campus to explore Coogee Snorkel Trail. There is a full day snorkelling excursion to Rottnest Island which will incur a cost of approximately $40.00.
ORIENTEERING: Students will learn how to read a map, identifying key points and areas, how to use a compass, the rules of orienteering, and how to perform at a competition level. Students will be involved in a one day excursion to Jorgensen National Park in Kalamunda and a one day competition.
ARCHERY: Students will learn the techniques and skills of Archery and the correct use of equipment.
A consumables charge of approximately $50.00 per student will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
LOCK - OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Andrew Lock is the first Australian to successfully climb all 14 of the world’s 8000-metre peaks, has a strong involvement and community groups and aid foundations and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2011 for service. This course is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes for safe participation in outdoor activities, encouraging personal and group responsibility and teamwork and to build important lifelong ‘soft skills’ such as organisation, personal preparation, time management and working with others, as part of a group and as a leader.
FISHING: How to fish, how to catch bream, how to rig your rod and associated equipment, the best fishing spots around the Swan River, to understand the implications of fish stocks and bag catch limits, how to prepare fish for cooking as well as how to cook them correctly.
ROCK CLIMBING: Students will learn the skills and techniques to climb and belay both on the College’s artificial wall and external Rock Climbing centres. An effective medium to promote responsibility for oneself and others, students will learn about equipment, communication and safety protocols.
CAMP SKILLS: How to manage yourself, your equipment and your group, how to safely recreate in the outdoors, with focus on organisation, communication skills, time management, planning, preparation and teamwork. Environmental impact on recreation areas, Mountain biking, rafting and cooking in a camp environment.
The course culminates in a camp where the focus is on safe and successful outdoor learning while practising the skills learnt throughout the Semester.
There is a camp cost of approximately $180.00 which includes specialist instructors, transport and specialist equipment. A consumables charge of approximately $50.00 per student will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
WELLNESS, RECREATION AND HEALTH FOR LIFE
The benefits of utilising physical activity as a vehicle for holistic wellness is becoming more crucial every year.
Students have the opportunity to become proactive and gain knowledge and understanding of health wellbeing through both outdoor recreational pursuits alongside more traditional wellness methods.
This course will provide students with the tools and up to date information about wellness to encourage them to prioritise their own wellbeing whilst at the College and in their future.
At All Saints’ College, students pursue this concept through the outdoors and along the way, they will explore the benefits that exposure to the outdoors and the unstructured lifestyle can bring. In particular, students will focus on identifying these benefits and translating them into real world, usable skills that promote resilience and life awareness. This course combines recreational activities with wellness and is suited to all levels.
