DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES - CURRICULUM OPTIONS

BIG DATA AND PROGRAMMING (DIGITAL TECH)
Many jobs require a high level of digital literacy; in a world which is becoming increasingly data driven this course equips students with an understanding and an application of Data Science, including ‘Big Data’ and how it can be created, mined and used in society. The other core aspect of this course is developing strong programming skills which will foster problem-solving and critical-analysis skills, both of which are proven to improve performance in all subject areas. In addition to solving authentic problems through a project-based learning approach, students will have the opportunity to join the National Computer Science School Challenge, an online programming competition for Senior School students through the School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney, as well as other worldwide competitions. This is an excellent introduction into both ATAR Computer Science and ATAR Applied Information Technology.

WEBSITE AND APP DESIGN (DIGITAL TECH)
Becoming familiar with industry standard software and skills in website and application development will give students an advantage in a world increasingly dependent on technology. In this course students will be exposed to the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite of software and various web authoring and application building software. This course also develops programming skills through the application of applying HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. Students will undertake a client or competition-driven project using a design process to build websites and applications. This is an excellent introduction into both ATAR Computer Science and ATAR Applied Information Technology.

MY KITCHEN, MY FOOD
This course has a focus on developing and improving skills and knowledge through a variety of activities including exploring and designing juices and smoothies, developing sustainable food products for a food expo and creating healthy fast food for friends (and themselves). On a weekly basis students work in pairs to produce recipes such as apple strudel, cake, biscuits, stir fries and other nutritious savoury food. Students explore the social, ethical and sustainability factors surrounding the development, production, supply and consumption of food. They also look into the development of food solutions, focusing on the physical and sensory properties and the health and safety factors involved is a focus.

BARISTA BLOGGERS
Do you have passion for coffee or making hot drinks? Have you wondered how to create a successful food / coffee blog? Then this is the course for you! Over a semester you will be immersed into the world of making and preparing café style drinks and food. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in using an espresso coffee machine to make a variety of hot drinks. Of course, when you are drinking a hot drink, you need something delicious and healthy to eat, so this course will focus on producing café style food such as bruschetta, soups, slices and cakes. You will also discover how to create a successful coffee / food blog by exploring successful sites such as ‘Sprudge’ and ‘I need
Coffee’. You will investigate food photography and food styling techniques and how these can be implemented into producing a successful blog.

NEXT LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Next Level Photography is a beginner’s course in taking your photography skills to the next level. You will learn how to improve your composition, use camera modes beyond automatic and learn how to manipulate your images in Adobe Photoshop. You will also learn how to use Adobe InDesign to develop eye-catching portfolios. Year 9 students and
students with no or little experience will learn some essential photography skills. Students who have completed Photography in Year 9 will get the opportunity to revisit some techniques in some new exciting activities and further skills needed for Year 11 and 12 studies.
PHOTO STORIES
Photo Stories is designed to assist you in putting more meaning into your photographic work. You will learn how you can use a camera, lighting and Photoshop techniques to tell a story, create an artwork and/or advertise a product or service. This course is perfect for those new to Photography and Photoshop and for those who have existing skills they wish to develop.
CUT OUT DESIGN
Cut Out Design is a course with a focus on using the Laser Cutter, 3D Printer, Adobe Software and the Precious Plastic machine for 2D and 3D projects. You will learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to design your own projects that can then be cut, engraved, printed or extruded. This course is perfect for those new to Design and those who have existing skills they want to develop. Cut Out Design is also a great subject to prepare for Year 11 subjects Design and AIT.
SUSTAINABLE WOODWORK IN PRACTICE
Do you enjoy working with your hands? Then this is the course for you. In this course you will design and produce functional and creative projects such as small items of furniture from wood. This will be done using a combination of traditional and modern techniques and equipment, in an ethical and sustainable manner. This could include the use of the laser cutter / engraver, vinyl cutter, 3D printers and scanner to further enhance/optimise the learning experience.
TECH IN ACTION - DRONE DESIGN
In this course, you will be applying the Technology Process to design, produce, test and evaluate your very own Multi Rotor Drone. These will be designed using Rhino CAD software and produced using laser cutting technology, utilising flat pack style design. You will also have the opportunity to further develop skills in the use of traditional fixed machinery, portable power tools and hand tools in the College workshops. If you enjoy making things with your hands, this is the course for you.
CONTEMPORARY TEXTILES
From hand-stitching to digital printing on fabric, Contemporary Textiles will explore techniques used by Textile artists around the world. You will learn how to applique using heat-activated adhesive, sew your own ‘lace’ using free-hand machine embroidery and water-soluble stabiliser, transfer paintings onto fabric using dispersal dyes and experiment with dyeing techniques using procion dyes. Using a variety of these techniques you will design and create an artwork for your wall or an accessory that you can wear.
CLOTH TO CATWALK
In Cloth to Catwalk, you will draw your own repeat pattern which will be transferred to fabric by a digital printing company. You will design and illustrate a small fashion range
inspired by your own surface pattern design and use your printed fabric to construct a simple garment or accessory. You will learn about the concepts behind ‘haute couture’ fashion and how fashion designers and the clothing industry operate, from small fashion-houses to large factories.
ROBOTICS - FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (STEM)
Students will engage in two STEM problem-solving challenges. The Robot Challenge is building and programming a LEGO robot that completes missions on a field. The Research Project is to identify and solve a real-world problem. Both challenges are undertaken with positive, collaborative principles that are celebrated at the high-energy, end-of-season competitions.
