Robotics
Robo-charging academic performance
By Jason Wang and William Lin, Year 12
We are glad to share our experience of Kilvington’s Robotics Program with you. We started at Kilvington in Year 9 in 2018, and have been a part of the Robotics Club since 2019.
In our first year of being a member of the Club, we participated in the prestigious RoboCup. We were disappointed that we did not win with our Rescue Robot, but are confident that with more time preparing and programming we would have won!
In 2020, we finished programming in preparation for RoboCup 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was cancelled. However, we still learned a lot from preparing for the competition and being part of the program.
The best part of being part of the Robotics Club is the cooperation between the members of your group. We work closely together to find ways to construct the appearance and functionality of the robot. We received great support and encouragement from our Robotics Captain, Luke Kiosoglous, and RoboCup 2018 Champion, Jerry Ge, who helped us navigate bugs and challenges. We also enjoy helping younger students solve their robot challenges.
Our Robotics teacher Mr Alexander, who first introduced the Robotic Club to us, is a great mentor and advocate for the program and always welcomes students to take on all things robotic!
If you ask whether spending lunchtime in the Robotics Club twice a week is helpful to academic achievement, we will say ‘Yes’. It has greatly benefited logical thinking for subjects such as Maths Methods, Physics and even Specialist Maths. Both of us chose these three VCE subjects in Year 11.
We hope you now have some insight into Kilvington’s Robotics Program from our experience!
