Homestay at Kilvington
The joys of being a Homestay Host
By Weiwei ‘Vivian’ Kong
Q. What is the reason you decided to become a Homestay Host?
A. I thought it would be a great experience for my children to interact with another child from a different culture; sharing moments and supporting each other while studying at Kilvington. It also helped that we had a spare room!
Q. What has been the experience like for you and your family?
A. The house has been much more lively and the environment has changed for the better with more people.
Q. Can you describe some of the experiences you have shared with your Homestay student?
- We make nutritional meals every day to support his growth and wellbeing.
- We have supported his learning, and have enrolled him in extra tuition sessions.
- When he is sick, we have comforted him.
Q. What has been the best part of being a Homestay Host?
A. Introducing another member to our family has exposed us to many positive new experiences and added a whole new dimension to our family environment.
Q. Anything else you’d like to add?
A. I would certainly recommend that families consider being a Homestay Host. There are so many benefits in sharing your space and lives with a young person from another country.
Family living

I live in a Homestay near my school. It is a great Homestay, and it only takes me five to 10 minutes to walk to school so that I have more time for sleep or study.
Vivian, my Host mum, helps me buy stuff that I need such as uniform and books. Derrick, my Host brother, is also a student at Kilvington. Sometimes we can chat about our school which is good. The food is very good as well. They take care of me when I am sick and I am really grateful for it.
Vivian is also helpful with my study. She gives me a lot of ideas and experiences. Everything in my Homestay is nice and clean. The environment is good. They all have a good lifestyle and habits. They are nice to me, and I am having a good experience.
Good environment, good life habits and good food!
