Reviving language: community Latin classes

Learn Latin at Northcote
Learning Latin is having a resurgence as people realise its value in improving literacy, giving insight into the ancient world and as an exciting intellectual exercise.
For the last three years we have been able to run an afterschool class for students of all year levels (and some parents too!) who want to learn Latin.
A number of students have been able to use this opportunity to move into doing Latin at the Victorian School or Languages or through Distance Education as a VCE study. Others have benefited from the experience of learning another language, challenging themselves and working in multi-age groups.
We are again offering these classes. We have a young Latin teacher keen to pass on her knowledge who takes a class every Thursday from 3.30pm to 5pm in room L3. Students at any level – from absolute beginners to those who already have some experience of the language - are welcome. Students work through the Cambridge Latin course, with a supplied textbook, at their own pace. Our teacher provides individual and small group instruction and support as well as providing mini-lessons on aspects of the socio-historic context of Ancient Rome.
The classes will run all year – with a total of approximately 30 sessions over the four terms. There will be a flat rate charge of $100 for the year’s tuition.
Potential students are welcome to try out the classes for a session or two to see if it suits them.
Anyone interested (we are happy to have more parents join the class!) can seek more information from Carlene Wilson (Wilson.carlene.j@edumail.vic.gov.au) or simply turn up to our next lesson.
