Principal's Report

Dear Parents,

A big thanks to all of you for being patient with our kiss and drop. The kiss and drop does seem to be running well at the moment although I know there is 10 minutes each night where it does stagnate.  I’m sure you are all aware that we do our best every day to keep the traffic moving.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY – COME DRESSED AS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK CHARACTER

On Friday May 21st we have a very special day in our calendar – Grandparents Day/Special Friends Day.  All grandparents or special friends are welcome to come along to see what our students do in class, enjoy an open morning and browse through our Book Fair.  This year we will be combining grandparent’s day with a theme day where students come dressed up as their favourite book character.

Costume Parade – 9:30am

Open Classroom Morning – 10am – 11am

Book Fair – Open all morning (In the school hall)

WYPS TUTOR PROGRAM

The State Government has funded a state wide tutoring program which is designed to help students that struggled with last year’s remote learning. The evidence we have so far is that the program we are running is doing very well and that the tutors we have employed Zena, Lucie, Lucy and Natalie are making a real impact.  Our school has been identified as doing well in this space and we have been asked to present what we are doing to all the other schools in our network.  Rachel Ward will be presenting as she has coordinated the program at our school.  Well done Rachel!

We already hope that the State Government funds the program again next year.

NAPLAN

This week our grade 3 & 5 students have been working very hard on their NAPLAN tests.  The attitude of our students has been fantastic, with all of them trying their best.  Our school has traditional performed very well in the NAPLAN tests.  The results of the tests don’t become available until much later in the year.

We are all very proud of them!

CAPITAL WORKS

Last week I briefed our School Council on what the draft plans are for our capital works program in 2022.  It really is very exciting that we will be basically getting a brand new school. At this stage the plans are for the new building to be built next to the current school building. Which will mean minimal disruption to the school.  Once the new building is finished we will move into the new building. The old building we are currently in will be mostly demolished, although our hall will definitely stay with plans for some refurbishment.  Plans will see the school upgraded with:

  • 9 new classrooms
  • New Science, Art, Kitchen and Library spaces
  • New administration block including a conference room and new first aide room
  • New toilets for staff and students
  • New basketball courts
  • Outdoor learning space and amphitheater

I look forward to showing the community the plans once they are finalised.  I believe that we are being rewarded for all the hard work that has gone into the school over the past ten years.  Good teaching is what is important in a school but having nice modern spaces will make our teachers and students feel even better.  It really is exciting times for our school and its community.

Have a great week!
And remember when life gets a little difficult, escape to the wonderful world of a book!
