At The Patch Café, our pizza menu has been a hit! The students have enjoyed seeing the oven fired up first thing in the morning and have all embraced the delicious menu they have created. Potato, rosemary and rocket pizza served with a green apple and celery leafy salad. All of the students were encouraged to have a taste, though very little persuading was needed!

Here is what some of our Year 3 students had to say about their time in the kitchen;

17th May 3B

Today we made a new dish in the kitchen. It was a delicious pizza with potato, rocket and rosemary. We didn’t add a lot of cheese but it stood out a lot. We used the grater to thinly slice our potatoes. We also finely cut the herbs before putting it all together on the pizza base. The pizza had lots of flavours and we can still taste all the herbs.

24th May 3C

Today we made a potato, rosemary and rocket pizza. We grated the cheese and potato and mixed it in a bowl then spread it on our pizza. The dough tasted very spongy and it was delicious. The rocket tasted peppery and the rosemary gave the pizza a lot of flavours.

News from the ‘Patch’

It is so good having grade 3-6 back in the Patch and they are enjoying it as much as I am.

We cannot stress the importance of the students being back in the garden, planting and growing bringing back the connection to the kitchen, we grow, cook and share. The students have embraced being back in the garden and have been so productive, planting, clearing beds, moving soil to fill our wicking beds ready for planting, weeding, collecting eggs and learning all aspects of growing. The experience in our garden enhances knowledge around the vegetables they are using, learning that some produce can take weeks if not months to grow. Students learn how to maintain the garden, what the right time is for planting our seasonal vegetables and how pests and the weather can affect production.

Food scraps for our girls (chickens).

At the beginning of term 3, we are looking forward to offering families the opportunity to bring in their food scraps for our chickens. The students are currently working on some artwork to decorate a bin where families can leave their scraps.

Chickens love leftovers!!!

I have a small bin on my bench where we as a family scrape our plates into, l empty stale bikkies, ends of the bread loaf, breakfast cereal, pasta, rice, bacon rind cut into smaller pieces and when I empty the crisper things like the salad/spinach leaves go in. This is then fed to the girls Mondays and Fridays.

We believe this is a better use for food waste and the girls will reward us with the most delicious eggs.
