Remote Learning Simplified
for Students
1. Wake up, sleepy head! Get ready, have some breakfast and get online for Period 1!
2. Before class starts, check the lesson plans for Period 1 and 2 on Compass! Check the lesson plans for Period 3 and 4 at the end of recess and the lesson plans for Period 5 and 6 at the end of lunch. Give yourself time to get the equipment you will need. Why? You will feel more prepared for the lesson and your brain will be working in the background to prepare for the development of new neural connections!
Lesson plans will contain the following parts:
Learning objective: which skills or knowledge you will build in the lesson
Success criteria: how you can demonstrate your success in learning
Activity/task information: with simple written instructions – so you can see what the teacher has planned to support your learning in the lesson
Reflection/Exit Pass: an opportunity to reflect on you learning- maybe a question like, what did you learn in this lesson?
3. Attend classes scheduled online or complete the work set, in so far as possible. You know you won’t be able to do everything easily - if it was easy and you could already do it, we wouldn’t be teaching it to you! Teachers will try to keep each lesson to 32 minutes.
4. Don’t stress but if you can’t help but stress, tell a teacher or a parent.
Remote learning can feel stressful. You’ve got to be online but your internet isn’t working! Your cat is walking on your keyboard! Grrr!
It might help you to know that the most important tasks in the remote learning phase will be labelled as:
‘FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT’: (and then the topic you’ve been studying in that subject recently). Your teachers will give you feedback orally in class and written feedback in the conversation bar in the FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Learning Task.
Red flags will often be placed next to the FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASK to let you know that the task is one to prioritise.
5. Otherwise, don’t forget to be a teenager….
- Spend time with your family
- Call your friends
- Take a walk-don’t forget your mask!
- Watch movies
- Listen to music
- Read about something that really interests you
- Do some mindfulness
- Create!
