Principal's Report

From Christian's desk....

CHAPS – the heartbeat of our community

Throughout my time at Croydon Hills the sense of community has shone through as an absolute highlight of the school. Over the past six months CHAPS have proven themselves over and over to be the glue that holds our community together.

Picture this:  their year started with the School Fair front and centre of their thinking, fast forward to now and the current world climate. Over the last three months CHAPS have been an invaluable conduit for communication, maintained a focus on school fundraising and now, amidst all that the COVID-19 world is throwing at us, rallied together to make staff face coverings.

Once again, I would like to acknowledge and thank CHAPS for the role they play as an integral foundation stone in the school's structural support.

Remote Learning 2.0

Remote Learning 2.0 has begun smoothly for our school.  All staff, student and parent reports have consistently been that children have been actively engaged in learning tasks and Google Meets.  Specifically, positive feedback has included:

  • The regular and routine Specialist time for each learning level.
  • The clear format of our Remote Learning website including the explicit teaching videos and accompanying learning engagements.
  • The Google Meet format, consisting of a mixture of small focus group lessons and whole class lessons.
  • That Fridays will be used for:
    • Extension work
    • Catch-up work with additional educator support
    • Fun Friday

Friyay Fundays

Tomorrow is the first of our series of Remote Learning 2.0 Friyay Fundays. This week’s focus is The Olympics, in lieu of the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Head to your child’s learning level page of our Remote Learning website to explore the day.

Over the coming weeks our Friyay Funday themes are:

  • Friday July 31 – Positive Education Day (Gratitude, Mindfulness, Empathy, Resilience)
  • Friday August 7 – Project Based Learning ‘Where in the World are you headed?’
  • Friday August 14 – Make and Create Activity Day
  • Friday August 21 – Science Day

Facilities update

This week our school signed off on the completion of our Prep Courtyard. This project was funded in part by the Federal Government's Local Schools Community Fund. The before and after pics illustrate the huge improvement in an otherwise unusable space. Features of the project include:

  • An outdoor learning and play area
  • Drinking taps
  • Undercover walkway
  • Enhanced security/access to the outer school areas

Looking after each other

I encourage all members of our adult school community to take the time to read Julie Reid's Weekly Wellbeing page.  It is full of down-to-earth, practical advice for ways to navigate these challenging times.
