HM's message

As you can see from this rather silly image taken of my speech at the hastily convened Year 6 Graduation Ceremony, I was trying to make light of the fact that the graduates had only really seen their teachers on their screens through the “Google Meet” application. It was meant to be a light-hearted visual gag but allowed me to explore with them what they (and to a lesser extent other year groups) had missed during the school closure. The message I gave them was that they had been operating in a two-dimensional world of lessons where teachers and fellow pupils alike were compressed onto a flat screen. 

I made the point that they had had to create their own third dimension; that in addition to the height and width of their screens they had had to add their own “depth” to the experience. I further argued this depth took many forms - resilience, self-reliance and inventiveness to name a few, but ultimately it was their unique story and would be one that they would undoubtedly tell their children and grandchildren. They had no exams to take, but certainly they had a story to take away. 

It was quite prophetic that at their Graduation Ball, their claim as part of their Casino theme said “All bets are off”. Linda Novobilská alluded to this in her speech on behalf of Year 6 and I think we’ll all be quite careful about what we wish for in the future. The concept of disruption, in erstwhile terms often seen as a negative, is gaining popularity as an agent of positive change in organisations. This is the idea that forced change brings innovation and adaptability. Certainly this has been true of our students, our teachers and of course parents too, who have worked with us so positively in these past four months as well. This disruption also brought change to the Graduation Ceremony, which almost everyone who attended thought was preferable to the previous format. 

With that in mind we are very likely to retain this more intimate format with just the Year 6 graduates in the future. Myself and the other speakers felt we were really addressing the graduates themselves and not just a general cohort of prize winners. This change will also give us an opportunity to celebrate our other prize winners in Years 1 to 5 at their own event in an updated version of our traditional Founders’ Day in November. Disruption perhaps that is the, ultimately positive, extra dimension I have chosen to take away from this unusual year.

Jak si můžete všimnout z této poněkud pošetilé fotografie pořízené během mého proslovu na spěšně uspořádaném slavnostním maturitním večeru pro 6. ročník, snažil jsem se zdůraznit skutečnost, že studenti své učitele viděli pouze na svých obrazovkách prostřednictvím aplikace Google Meet. Měl to být jen takový veselý žert, ale umožnil mi zabývat se tím, o co maturanti (a v menší míře i jiné ročníky) přišli během uzavření škol. Připomněl jsem jim, že vše fungovalo jen ve dvourozměrném světě vyučování, kde byli učitelé i spolužáci komprimováni na plochou obrazovku. 

Poukázal jsem na to, že si museli vytvořit svou vlastní třetí dimenzi a že kromě výšky a šířky svých obrazovek museli k zážitku přidat i svou vlastní „hloubku“. Dále jsem se zamýšlel nad tím, že tato hloubka měla mnoho různých forem - například odolnost, soběstačnost a vynalézavost, ale především to byl jejich jedinečný příběh, který budou nepochybně vyprávět svým dětem a vnoučatům. Letošní maturanti neměli žádné IB zkoušky, ale určitě získali příběh, který si s sebou odnesou. 

Bylo to skoro jako proroctví, že si jako hlavní slogan svého maturitního plesu na téma Kasino vybrali ve volném překladu větu: „Život je nepředvídatelný“. Linda Novobilská to zmiňovala ve svém projevu jako zástupkyně 6. ročníku a domnívám se, že od teď budeme všichni poměrně opatrní v tom, co si do budoucna přejeme. Koncept narušení, který byl v dřívějších dobách často vnímán jako negativní, získává na popularitě jakožto prostředek pozitivní změny v organizacích. Hlavní myšlenkou je, že nucená změna přináší inovaci a přizpůsobivost. To jistě platí i pro naše studenty, naše učitele a samozřejmě i rodiče, kteří s námi v posledních čtyřech měsících spolupracovali tak pozitivně. Toto narušení přineslo i změnu ve formátu maturitního večera a téměř každý, kdo se zúčastnil, novou formu této akce přivítal. 

Je tedy možné, že díky tomu uchováme tento intimnější ráz pouze s absolventy 6. ročníku i do budoucna. Já i ostatní řečníci jsme cítili, že jsme oslovovali exkluzivně naše absolventy a ne celou skupinu nových držitelů akademických ocenění napříč ročníky. Tato změna nám také umožní oslavit všechny oceněné z 1. až 5. ročníku v pozměněné verzi naší tradiční oslavy Dne zakladatelů školy, která se koná v listopadu. Narušení je tedy tím dalším, veskrze pozitivním rozměrem, který si odnáším z tohoto neobvyklého školního roku.
